But I’ve been careful nevertheless. Underestimating Mosar has been my downfall so far. It just takes one slip up to receive another beating at his hand.

Not only has it been liberating sneaking out to go to the tavern, but I’ve been really enjoying getting to know the minotaur I met.

Zy a lot different than I had expected to be honest. Seeing him sitting there in the dim light, a playful smile on his face, I had expected him to be exactly like all the other guardsmen. He had that cocky grin, that unabashed air...but when I sat down, he was so much quieter than I expected—a little softer too. We talked for hours until the tavern was closing.

Something about him drew me in and I was looking forward to seeing him again. I like to think that fate was giving me a guiding hand in this—that I found just the right guard to seduce. Maybe I just liked the look of him. Who knows.

Whatever it was, it had me boldly sneaking out once again in my borrowed dress, a fresh comb in my hair once again – this one stolen from a fellow servant. Last night I spent all night chatting with Zy but tonight I’m going to put my plan into action. The moment I heard about Nova’s situation, I knew that I wanted in.

As a human we have so few resources at our disposal. As an indentured servant, we have even less. The minotaurs treat their indentured servants mostly fairly but there are quite a few bad mueske that spoil the whole lot. So I’m taking this opportunity by the horns.

It will be nice having someone that loves me unconditionally as well. Someone who will always be there for me. A child will make my life so much better—I just know it.

Strolling down the quiet streets, I glance back over my shoulder a few times just to ensure no one is following me. I’ve been lucky so far but you can never be too careful, especially with a master like Mosar.

As soon as I arrive, I notice Nova working behind the bar, wiping glasses. I give her a little wave and she frowns at me, raising an eyebrow. My own quirks up, wondering what got into her mogabii.

Ignoring her, I make my way over to a table, fiddling with the few coins in my pocket I’ve managed to save up. If Zy isn’t here again, I’ll have to find another target and I’m not looking forward to starting from scratch—especially if it means having to part with my hard earned coin.

But I’m in luck once again because at that moment, Zy comes strolling in with a few other guards and I watch, mesmerized as the candlelight flickers across his silvery fur and his green eyes sparkle in amusement at something one of his friends says.

He’s like something out of a dream and it takes my breath away. A shiver rolls down my spine and I can’t tear my eyes from him.

His eyes find mine and the corners of his lips turn into a broad grin. He waves in greeting as he skirts his way through the crowd, his large form looming over me momentarily before slumping into the chair across from mine.

“Didn’t expect to see you again so soon,” Zy says, tilting his head as he examines me.

“What? And miss seeing you again?” I tease, testing the waters. Zy ducks his head a little, looking at me from under long lashes.

“You really came back to see me?” he asks, scratching his head. I nibble my lip and lower my lashes.

“Of course I did. I can’t forget the handsome fella who entertained me all night, now can I?”

He runs a hand through his shaggy mane, one hand slightly covering his face. “Oh, well...thank you,” he stammers out.

Taking the opportunity, I reach out and caress his hand with mine. “It’s nice to be around men like you,” I tell him. “You’re so much kinder than many of the men I’ve been around lately.”

Like my master, I think, my eyes briefly narrowing. I force myself to relax though, not wanting Zy to think anything is wrong. I need to focus on my mission. Seducing Zy has become my number one priority.

“Will you finish the story that you were going to tell me last night?” I ask, nudging him. “Something about a stolen robe and mueske grenades!”

Zy launches back into a story about the time he was on patrol and he nearly fell off a cliff chasing what turned out to be a capucho wearing a stolen robe. I’m in stitches by the end, tears streaming down my cheeks as he tells me about how he had to limp back to base and tell his captain not only that he managed to be outwitted by a capucho but that he couldn’t even retrieve the captain’s robe.

“Did he ever get the robe back?” I ask, clutching my stomach as I wipe away the tears.

“Don’t tell anyone but...I think I saw a capucho in a robe on the hill just yesterday,” Zy swears.

I’m laughing again, leaning into him as I catch my breath.

“What about you?” Zy asks. “Have you ever had to chase an animal in a stolen garment?”

“No,” I grin. “Sadly not. But I did fall into the river with the entire basket one time when I was trying to do laundry. My master...” I trail off, suddenly clamming up. I’m not about to bring him up. Not here. Not right now.

“Was he mad?” Zy presses.

“Oh, I was sopping wet and I had to do all the laundry for the household for a month as punishment!” I keep my tone airy and light. “Joke’s on him though. It was a hot summer and I got to spend all my time at the river!”

He chortles at that and I lean into him, feeling warm and content. I’ve had two flagons of ale and it’s loosened me up nicely. My eyes find Zy’s and I study his face, the dim candlelight of the tavern making his green eyes almost glow.
