“Well, there’s something else I need to tell you about Zy. You see, I haven’t been entirely honest.”

Hardly a surprise to me.

“Nothing new there Kyra.”

“Okay, I get it alright? I’m sorry I fucking hurt you but you need to hear the reason why I’m doing all of this.”

“What good reason could you have for breaking my damned heart?”

She reclines in her seat, looking up at the ceiling for a brief moment. She then returns her gaze to me, her eyes welling with tears.

“The boss I told you about, Mosar? I’m… not a free worker who chose to go and work with him.”

Oh shit.

“Wait a minute, you’re not saying…”

“Yeah, I’m working under him on an Indenture contract.”

“Damn it, why didn’t you tell me before?” I sigh.

“Because this wasn’t how it was supposed to go.”

“You getting pregnant? I don’t understand what any of this has to do with-”

“Shut up! Let me explain it to you!”

Biting my tongue, I gesture for her to continue.

“I’ve been trying to get out of the Indenture contract for some time. Now that I’m pregnant, I have a way out but I’m not in the clear just yet. This is where I need you.”

“What for?” I ask.

“I need you to sign off on some paperwork for me. Your signature will nullify the remaining time I have left with Mosar and make me a free woman.”

“Wait a minute…” I mutter, my voice trailing off. “So you weren’t using me for sex… You were using me to get you pregnant?”

Kyra shifts nervously in her seat, curling like a dead yillese.

“Yeah, I… I admit it. Getting pregnant was all part of the plan.”

I scoff in disbelief, unable to find words.

“I’m sorry Zy, I had to get out of my contract!”

Feeling off, I huff and growl under my breath. Quickly though, I catch myself and take a deep breath, not being one for anger and rage. I’ve never liked what it does to me.

There’s no point reacting in a hostile manner Zy… She’s already pregnant. You cannot undo putting your seed in her.

“Kyra, how long is left on your Indenture?” I ask calmly.

“It ends five years from now.”

“Five years? That is some time away, but you must understand that honor has to be earned in this society without shortcuts and loopholes.”

“No, it’s not that.”

“Why should you get a pass to skip all of the hard work? To reap the benefits of society without proving yourself?” I demand.
