“It’s all over now, you need not worry any longer,” I whisper, rubbing her lower back in small circles. “I promise everything has already been taken care of, I saw to it personally. Nothing bad is going to happen to you, you can concentrate on getting better and I’ll help you any way I can.”

After another few minutes of reassurance and whisperings of affirmations, her crying eventually quietens down. Soon, the only sounds in the room are those of our hearts, beating at the same time. The room becomes entrenched in a calm atmosphere, the type of stillness that comes after a good cry, complemented by the warm yellow glow of a singular candle in the corner of the room.

“Mosar isn’t going to be a problem for you anymore, I swear that on my life Kyra.”

Pulling back, she peers up at me. Her eyes are almost colored red from the tears, coupled with her black eyes it looked like she went through the Arena and back just to survive.

“I….I…” she stutters, her lips shaking uncontrollably.

“Take your time Kyra, there’s no rush. We have all the time in the world.”

“I thought… I thought I heard you talking to one of the city guards outside… But I don’t know, I was really out of it.”

“Indeed I was. I was pulling a few favors, asking them to deploy extra patrols near the Broken Horn Tavern from now on. They’re also going to keep surveillance on Mosar and his movements. He won't get away with any of this.”

“It all makes sense now,” she groans. “I was wondering who it was you and the guard kept referring to… Damn, Mosar must’ve really fucked me up.”

“He did, there’s no doubt about that. Just for extra measure, I think I should start meeting you at the tavern at the end of your shifts. That way, I can walk you home safe and sound.”

“Hmm,” she chuckles. “That’ll be nice. It’ll almost be like the good old days, except we’ll be going home together.”

“Yeah, almost,” I reply. Internally, I wish it was like the good old days, where we were together and would get close.

I run my hands over her cheeks once more, this time dashing away her tear marks. I hold her for another while. Before long, the door opens, inwards strolling Phemes. In her arms, she holds a tray carrying a teapot as well as two small cups. Sitting neatly arranged on a plate was sliced up fijus.

“How are you feeling Kyra?” she asks.

“I’m doing a little bit better.”

“Good. here, have some tea and fruit, you must eat and regain some of your strength back.”

“Thank you Phemes,” I say, pouring some of the tea into the cups. The steam bounces and twirls through the air, blasting our nostrils with floral aromas of rirzed and fylvek grass. “How is our child? Is he okay?”

“Traisius is sound asleep in my room.”

“I have another favor to ask if you don’t mind.”

“What can I help you with, my dear?” she asks.

“I was talking with Kyra about this situation. I suggested that I can start meeting her at work so I can pick her up and get us home safely. The only thing is that Traisius would need someone to watch over him while I do so. Would you mind if I gave him to you for no more than an hour each night?”

“Of course not, my dear. I can keep an eye on him for however long you may need on any day. I am glad to lend help anytime it is needed.”

“Thank you Phemes, you’re a good person,” says Kyra.

“Please,” replies the healer, brushing her compliment off politely. “There’s no praise needed for basic decency. It’s what the world needs more of if you ask me. Now then, can I get you anything else?”

“We’re okay for now.”

Phemes bows respectfully, then turns around and leaves, gently closing the door behind her. It feels good to have someone so trustworthy and reliable living right beside us, it makes the world feel a little bit safer. Zukiev knows just how much that’s needed in our lives right now.

Kyra comes closer and rests her head on my chest. As the night slowly drifts by, I’m gazing out of the window. The whole time, I’m thinking about what I did to Mosar and the pain I put him through, the agony I made him feel at my wrath.

Never in my life had I been driven with so much rage all at once,I think to myself. The rampage I had been operating on almost turned me into a different person. As much as it scared me, I realize that I only acted that way to protect the person I’ve come to care for the most.

No one else will ever dare to come near you again Kyra. Once they catch sight of Mosar, you’ll be untouchable.

“Zy,” she mutters. “What… exactly did you do to Mosar?”
