“Well what fun is drink without at least a little bit of revelry?” I ask with a wink, letting my voice come out breathy and suggestive. Zy’s beautiful eyes widen a bit, and a smug sense of satisfaction fills me at his reaction. This male with all his confidence and easy grace must be used to female attention, so his clear attraction to me is something that does wonders for my confidence.

“You mentioned having a hard shift, are you a guard?” I ask, pivoting the conversation a little so I don’t seem like I’m laying it on too thick.

“What gave it away?” He asks wryly, and I look pointedly down at his uniform, earning another laugh.

“Yeah, being a part of the city guard is a privilege, but there are certainly some draw-backs, especially with the shifts I work.”

“Like what?” I ask. I’m only half-listening as he tells me about his shift, paying extra attention to leaning in and smiling, brushing his arm casually as he speaks. I knew he was something when I first saw him, but this is even better than I could’ve imagined. A member of the city guard, especially with his confidence and obvious physical assets, surely has his pick of women. It’ll be all too easy to get in his pants and even easier to slip out of his arms in the morning.

No attachment necessary.

Even as other women happen by, both minotaur and human, and cast Zy curious and inviting glances, his eyes never stray from me. I smile, enjoying his attention and conversation a little more than necessary for my plans.

Now comes the truly fun part.

To think I had reservations about coming here tonight… Now I see I definitely made the right choice. Had I not come, I would’ve totally missed out on the chance of meeting this incredibly gorgeous girl that sits before me. Who would’ve thought a loner would’ve received this much attention? Certainly not me.

As a city guard, I’m generally wary of thieves and pickpockets. I had an inkling of suspicion when Kyra came up to me. I know what signs to look out for when someone’s planning on robbing you, but she hasn’t exhibited any such behaviors. I genuinely believe she’s interested in me. It’s a strange yet warm feeling that she gives me.

“I love your fur by the way, silver’s a beautiful color,” says Kyra, running her eyes over my arms.

“Thanks, I grew it myself,” I laugh.

Without hesitation, she leans closer, running her hands up and down my arms. She squeezes my muscles and lets my fur glide through her fingers. A concentrated look comes within the flicker of her eyes, squinting ever so slightly as if studying my body.

Kyra’s zhisk brown eyes then move to meet mine. In them I see curiosity, complemented by her head tilt. Long blonde hair falls down over her forehead, first coming down straight then breaking off in different directions like the roots of a tree. In the ambient glow of the lamps placed all around the tavern, the freckles sitting upon her nose jump out at me.

“I love those freckles of yours, they’re incredibly cute,” I say.

“Thank you,” she quips, glancing away in shyness. “I never ever thought I’d hear a big minotaur say the word ‘cute’, I guess there’s a first time for everything.”

“Well, I’m not like other minotaurs,” I chuckle.

“So mister city guard, tell me more about yourself. Where do you come from?” she asks as she takes a drink.

“I come from a small village, quite far from Karona. It’s a quiet little place with amazing scenery, though there’s just as many drunkards roaming the streets.”

“So you came here from somewhere else too eh?” beams Kyra. “I used to live in Tlouz before I moved here.”

“What brought you to Karona?” I ask.

“Well, I use the words ‘live’ and ‘move’ very loosely,” she says, crossing her brows in deep thought. “You see, I was kept as a worker in an orc encampment for my whole life, until I managed to escape. Then, I found myself here.”

“Damn, that must have been tough. At least you made it out of there, I hear orcs can be brutal sons of bitches.”

“It’s true, believe you me.”

“So what do you think of this old place?”

“It’s nice but I don’t get to enjoy it much,” she says before pausing. For a moment, her lips retreat into her mouth, seemingly thinking of what to say next. “I… work long hours in one of the shops around here. My boss is a real asshole.”

“Ha! I know what that’s like,” I reply, nodding my head. I then raise my pint. “Bosses, can’t live with them, can’t live without them!”

Smiling, she clinks her drink with mine before we finish them.
