There’s so much going on and it pisses me off. That I have to do this. That these people aren’t letting me do what I do best.

“I think we need to let her be Karma,” Raven speaks up softly, stepping close.

“Little Bird,” Blaze growls, glaring at her. “Are you crazy?”

Raven smirks and looks at him. “You know I am.” She shrugs. “But I’m serious. The winds speak that it’s to be done like so. She’s to do this, and we’re to back her up if she needs it.”

Well, thank you, universe.

“I’m not about to let my woman go out there and deal with traffickers without me,” Brass snarls.

Raven nods and looks to Brass. “You should listen and remember what I told you earlier. Karma needs to do this, and we’ll back her up. As long as we’re smart about this, nothing will happen except that we’ll get a group of women and kids safe before it’s too late.”

Fuck me.

“Athena, look at me.” Brass’s fingers tighten.

Slowly, I give him my attention and take in his hard, stone-cold features. He’s beyond pissed.

“You do this and then you’re fuckin’ done, you hear me?”

I blink at him, taking in his harsh words. “Excuse me?”

“After this shit, you’re done. I won’t lose you because you have to be the one to save everyone. I can see it in your eyes. You want to take care of everything and everyone. That’s not going to happen anymore. You’re gonna be done. You’re gonna be with me. My woman, and you’re gonna be the mom Jesse deserves you to be. He wants you happy, and you need to get over this bullshit.”

“You did not just say that.”

How dare he?

“He’s right,” Reap adds, stepping from the shadows.

“What are you doing here?” I demand, though I shouldn’t be surprised.

“We’ll discuss this later,” Reap states and glances around the area. “Time’s ticking, and if this is going to get done, it needs to happen now.”

CHAPTER18

ATHENA

Making my way through the shadows, I push everything else to the back of my mind. I know Brass is still seriously pissed off with me right now, but honestly, after what he said, I am with him as well. He had no right to say what he said to me and when I finish this, proving to him I don’t need him to act like a dick toward me, then I’ll make my thoughts known.

For now, my focus needs to be on getting in and out with those who are in danger.

“Did you find her?”

I stop around a dark corner, hearing the voice.

“We did.”

“And you’re sure it’s her. It’s been over fifteen years, she was no more than a kid back then.”

“I know it’s her because I was able to get some of her hair to confirm DNA.”

They can’t be talking about me.

“Excellent. The boss is going to be happy.”

“I thought he would be. He’s wanted her for a long time.”
