I step closer to the group and whisper, “Work together, stay close, try not to make a sound. We’re getting out of here.”

“Why are you helping us?” one of the men asks.

“Because, you do something for someone, and Karma always comes back to get you. Good deeds or not,” I answer and jut out my chin. “Let’s go.”

I ignore the vibration of my phone and start back the way I came, with more than two dozen people following me. God knows, come tomorrow all of them would have been sold, and who knows what would’ve happened to them.

On silent feet, I keep moving, watching the shadows. The closer I get to the outside, I dreaded whether or not the club made it through. Those men are serious badasses, but that doesn’t mean something couldn’t have gone wrong. I can hope that, considering my phone vibrated, it could be seen as a sign of good things. Let’s just hope it’s true.

CHAPTER19

BRASS

This whole situation is fucked.

I prowl through the building, killing anyone who gets in my way of getting to Athena. Why the fuck couldn’t she simply talk to me about this shit? We could have figured out a better way to handle it. Instead, she decided to sneak the fuck out on me.

I felt her leave the bed and waited to see what she would do. With each piece of clothing she put on, it pissed me off. But what really got me was that she left. Fucking left without thinking.

Yeah, I get that she knows what the hell she’s doing, but that doesn’t stop me from wanting to make sure she’s safe. It’s not in my nature to just let her go. Then I followed her, letting her get as far as outside the building before confronting her. I knew the others were out there watching, waiting.

Then we all went along with her, and now, as I make my way through the building with Red and Striker at my back, I still want nothing more than to throttle her. Especially after the text she sent.

What the hell was she thinking? We took out at least twenty men so far, and I’m sure there are more, but they’re not running, storming our direction. They’re waiting for the right moment to gun for us. I can feel it in my gut this isn’t over with.

I hear the scuffing of feet on the concrete floor just ahead and slow my steps, gun raised, ready to pull the trigger. A smart man knows how to prepare and wait, and as I hold my gun steady, I do just that. It’s a good thing cause the next moment, I come face to face with my woman and a shit ton of people behind her.

I give her a quick body scan, ensure she’s okay, and look at those behind her.

“We have to get them out of here,” she whispers on no more than a breath.

I nod and look to Red and Striker. “You two follow, I’ll help get them out of here.”

Striker nods, and Red takes in the group of people before nodding as well.

I turn my attention to Athena and jerk my chin. “Let’s get a move on.”

She nods and starts walking again. Together we show the way, my eyes alert and scanning over every shadow. The entrance comes into view, and my gut tightens. Something’s not right.

I prepare myself for it as I glance over to Athena to see she’s also on alert. Watching, waiting.

Several of my brothers come in sight. When they notice us, they come forward to help get everyone out just as more gunshots ring.

“Get down,” I shout, going to cover Athena, but I learn quickly she doesn’t need me to. I take my shots, taking out every man I can, all the while making sure my woman is safe.

Screams surround us, and suddenly, the gunfire stops as a man steps out, yelling, “Hold your fire.” He’s dressed in a silk shirt and black slacks, his hair is slicked back, and he’s got a nasty scar on his face.

Out of the corner of my eye, I notice Athena stiffen. She knows this man. I’m certain of it. I take a step closer to her, wanting to put her behind me, and I focus on the other man.

“You’ve caused quite the dilemma for me,” he says, shoving his hands in his pockets and glancing around. I already knew that all the people Athena got out were out of the building. They rushed out the moment the gunfire started, probably more than scared for their lives.

“Dilemma, my ass,” Athena snarks, getting the man’s attention to him. “You’re nothing more than a puppet master who needs to be put down.”

The man’s eyes go to Athena, and he grins. “Well, well, well, it’s been a long time since I saw you last, but I’d recognize those eyes and hair from anywhere.”

“And I recognize that ugly ass face of yours,” Athena spits out, tensing even more.

“How about this,” he says, not taking his eyes off Athena. “You come with me, and I won’t shoot any more of these men. And I’ll forget about the fact you’ve just stolen several million dollars from me.”
