A laugh gets lodged in my throat. She doesn’t know how right she is. Or maybe she does. Her gaze narrows even further and I hold up my hands. “Can’t a guy admire a beautiful woman sitting in front of him without being accused of having an ulterior motive?”

“Not when you’re the guy, no.”

“Harsh.”

She shrugs. “If that’s what it takes to get you to tell me what you’re planning.”

“Why can’t you just enjoy the journey? Let me surprise you.”

Something flashes in her eyes and she gives me a triumphant grin. “So youareplanning something.” She leans in, places her hand over mine, and starts tracing soft circles on my palm. Her tongue darts out to wet her lips and she looks up at me through hooded lids. “Can I have a hint?”

She’s trying to seduce the truth out of me and the realisation sends a jolt straight to my cock. I snatch my hand back and glare at her. Or, at least, I try to. The way she leans back into her seat and smirks tells me I’ve not quite hit the mark.

“You’re not playing fair.”

She quirks a brow in faux innocence. “Not ready for round two?”

My cock twitches and I return the smirk. “That’s definitely not the problem.”

“Then what is?”

“The fact that you’re incredibly impatient.”

“You’reincredibly irritating.”

I flash her a wide grin. “Say it like you mean it, sweetheart.”

She rolls her eyes. “You’re really not going to tell me whatever it is you’re planning?”

“Not yet.”

“When?”

I shrug. “A couple days? Maybe three? Four?”

If I’d had things my way, everything would have been ready from the moment she landed. But, as Nel keeps reminding me, good things take time and besides, I’m in perfectly safe hands with my sister.

Debate flashes across Amber’s face before she gives me a begrudging nod. “Four days. But I’ve got my eyes on you.”

“I wouldn’t have it any other way, sweetheart.”

Amber stretches outon my couch like she belongs here. Like she’s been here countless times before and will find her way again.

I lift her legs and drape them over my thighs as I settle into the empty space next to her. “How’re you feeling?” She responds with a yawn and I open up my arms. “Come here.”

She crawls into my lap without hesitation, and I’m starting to realise that maybe I’ve got a territorial streak in me too. Because she’s wearing an old sweatshirt of mine like it was made for her, and suddenly I don’t want to see her in anything else again.

“Don’t let me fall asleep,” she murmurs, even as her eyelids flutter shut. “I need to make it a few more hours so jet lag doesn’t kick my ass.”

My fingers flex against the fabric of my sweater as she gets comfortable on my lap.

Work has been the number one priority in my life for as long as I can remember. All I’ve cared about is rising to the top and silencing the whispers and gossip that follows me. Outside of that, I’ve never felt empty or like I was missing something, but Amber has quickly filled a gap in my life I hadn’t even realised was there.

I could get used to this. If she’ll let me.
