“It’s my mistake to make.”

Seriously, don’t they get that? This is my life, and I’m perfectly happy with my choices. Especially the ones I am making about my career.

“Thelma.” The censure is heavy in his tone. I can’t do this. Not right now. I’m coming down off the fantastic high of tonight going so well, and he’s killing my buzz. That’s the last thing I want.

“No. I’m leaving. Thank Uncle Ken and Aunt Laura. Tonight was amazing, but I can’t be here anymore.”

Turning abruptly, I leave him mid-sentence, completely uninterested in whatever he was going to say or cajole. He might be a legendary negotiator at Rampwood & Stein, but he blew this encounter.

My face flames as I step out of the nook and find myself face-to-face with Jimmy, who is waiting for me in the entryway.

His eyes dart behind me, and my cheeks heat further as the realization that heheardeverything sets in. Ugh, I don’t want to have to deal with this.

I seize his hand, and he lets me drag him out of the house and down Aunt Laura’s neatly kept path to the line waiting for town cars and taxis.

“Where are we going?” Jimmy asks, shrugging off his fitted jacket and dropping it around my shoulders. I smile gratefully up at him, holding it closed at my throat.

“Away from here.”

“That suits me fine.”

The line moves quickly, and an usher holds the taxi door open as we slide inside. I give my address, and Jimmy takes my hand, flipping it over on the seat between us, tracing circles on my palm with his fingertips, driving me crazy.

He insists on paying the driver when we arrive, and I lead him upstairs and into my condo. His eyes immediately find the view of Elliott Bay, his feet taking him over to the tan sectional sofa and the fireplace. I can’t blame him. The view gets me every time too.

I detour through the kitchen, pouring myself a glass of red wine and Jimmy a whiskey before joining him. His fingers brush mine as he takes the tumbler off me, and we sink into the sectional, still watching the dark water below us.

Working my shoes off, I leave them on the floor, setting my bare feet on the coffee table. Emboldened, Jimmy kicks off his leather shoes, propping his feet beside mine, his arm dropping around my shoulder, his fingertips tracing more circles on the bare flesh.

“I liked your speech tonight.”

“Thanks. I meant every word.”

“I could tell. That’s what I liked so much about it.”

Grinning, I take a sip of my wine. That’s a nice thing to hear.

“I like your condo too. It suits you.”

“Mom and Dad hate it. They think I should move closer to Artie and Holly.”

“Don’t listen to them. This place is amazing.” His eyes are still glued to the view. With a giggle, I snuggle against his side, chatting about dinner as I finish my wine and he drains his whiskey.

“What now?” he asks, his voice strained. I set my wineglass on the coffee table, my lips brushing his ear as I breathe into it.

“Now you finish what you started in that office.”

Jimmy surges off the couch, setting his whiskey tumbler next to my glass, his hands seizing me around my waist. With a shriek, I’m thrown over his shoulder as he strides down the hallway, searching for my bedroom.

“This is very caveman-like,” I laugh, calling over my shoulder to him. His palm connects with my ass with a muffled thump as he slaps it playfully.

“Hey, you’re the one who asked me to fuck you.”

Yeah, I did. Jimmy finds my bedroom, shoves the door open, and drops me onto my white coverlet. Standing over me, he grins down at me as he slowly peels off his clothes, revealing the rugged torso I knew was hidden under those mouthwatering workout clothes he always wears.

“You look good on that bed,” he growls, eyes dark with need.

“I’d look better naked with you on top of me,” I breathe. A low growl rumbles out of Jimmy as he strips off the last of his clothes, landing on top of me, his hands moving to shed mine too.
