That sounds like a fair answer. “Are you a good lawyer?”

Pink spills across Thelma’s cheeks. “I’d like to think so.”

“From what I accidentally overheard last night, your father might think so too.”

Thelma’s cheeks darken from pink to red, and she giggles nervously.

“They want me to work for Rampwood & Stein.”

“I gathered. You don’t want to.”

Sighing, Thelma shakes her head, almost sadly, hunching forward and tracing her thumb over the rim of her mug, looking at the table in front of us.

“All the boys did. I guess I was the rebel. The disappointment.”

It didn’t sound like they were disappointed in her last night. They were all supporting a charity auction gala that meant something to her.

“All the boys?”

Thelma chuckles low in her throat, making my dick twitch. I ignore the bastard. It’s not the time. I want to know more about why Thelma Rampwood walked away from the lucrative family business and into the public defender’s office. It seems at odds with everything I know about the Rampwood family. It’s an itch in my brain that I need to be scratched.

“Artie, Pete, and my other cousins, Lance and Parker.”

“The Rampwood twins?” I’ve heard of them. Their playboy antics are legendary here in Seattle.

“Yeah, them,” she drawls, rolling her eyes at me before settling her gaze back on the table with a sigh. “They all did the right thing, joining the family business.”

“If it didn’t feel right to you, it wasn’t the right thing.”

Thelma’s head snaps up, and she relaxes into a smile. “That’s what I thought too.”

I shrug. “Just because everyone else did something doesn’t sound like a good reason to pick an entire career.”

“Right! I understand why Pete did. He’s an only child, and it was important to Uncle Ken. Artie was always going to. Believe it or not, that was his dream when he was little. No firefighting or soldiering for him. It was always ‘I’m going to work with Dad’.”

Snickering, I think of Artie. I’d believe that. Thelma giggles, smoothing her thumb over the rim of her mug again.

“The twins… I’m not sure. One did it, and the other didn’t want to be left out.”

“And you?”

A bone-deep sigh blows from between her plump pink lips. “I want to help people. People who deserve help.”

“So, public defender’s office.”

“So, public defender’s office.”

“Good for you.”

Thelma blushes and smiles again, pulling her file back toward her and sipping her coffee as she continues to read. As she reads, we lapse into a comfortable silence, and I watch her, slowly drinking my coffee.

Eventually, Thelma looks up at me. “What? What are you thinking?”

“I want to taste your pussy so badly.”

She laughs, pushing her chair away from the table and spreading her legs. My tongue darts out to lick my lips when my eyes land on the treasure displayed to me. She’s not wearing panties. She hasn’t been wearing panties this whole time. I’m the luckiest fucker alive. Tearing my eyes away from the nirvana, they meet Thelma’s hooded ones as she smiles seductively.

“Come and taste it then.”
