Caught off guard by Miko’s smooth, accented voice, I screamed and accidentally rolled out of bed. I landed with a resounding thud against the floor, hitting my elbow on the nightstand and my head on the floor. Even covered in a soft rug, the hardwood floors packed a punch when you fell on them.

“Fuck, Princess, I’m sorry.” Miko jumped into action, putting the tray in his hands down on the dresser along the wall. He moved toward me, bending low to help get me into a sitting position against the bed.

“Hate you,” I muttered, keeping my eyes shut to stop the room from spinning. My stomach rolled, and bile filled my throat as I breathed in through my nose to try and calm the nausea.

“I know.” He sighed and gathered me into his arms. I was too weak to protest, and my traitorous body relaxed further into his embrace as a rumble started in his chest.

His deep vanilla and clove scent invaded my nostrils, and once again, I found myself under his spell.

“Why?” I managed to croak out. His hand ran up and down my arms, fingers digging into my flesh in a pleasant massage. Slowly, my strength returned, yet I still could not pull away from him.

“We’ll explain when you’re feeling up to it.”

“‘We’? Who is‘we’?”

Miko grunted before kissing the top of my head. “You met Cormac in the car. I have another friend who is dying to see you as well.”

See me? Notmeetme? After talking with Miko online for months, I knew he didn’t mix up his phrases. Everything he said was intentional.

Meaning, I knew whoever the fuck it was he was talking about.

“What are you going to do with me?” I asked, getting straight to the point. If they intended to use me and then kill me, I’d like to know.

“We have a special project for you. It’s why I had to drug you and why we brought you here. Please, just try to relax for the moment. In due time, we will explain everything.” He ran his fingers through my hair, murmuring soft words of encouragement while his chest rumbled beneath me.

I found myself nodding off in his arms, lulled by the false sense of security of Miko’s embrace and soothing touch.

Why did alphas like him have this power over omegas? It was infuriating. I wanted to scream and kick him in the balls. But I also wanted to stay like this forever—curled up in his arms.

As I was drifting off, a familiar scent drifted through my senses.

“How is she?” The voice was also hauntingly familiar, but the effects of the drugs were still running through my system, and I couldn’t make the connection.

“Tired,” Miko answered, his hand still stroking up and down my back in a hypnotic rhythm. “Wants to gut me. You know the usual reaction to me.”

The unknown man chuckled, and more of his bergamot scent drifted through, haunting me with the wispy tendrils of a memory long since buried.

“Doesn’t look like she wants to gut you, judging by how easily she accepted your purr.”

“Hate him,” I mumbled, but it lacked any malice or conviction.

Both men laughed, and Miko’s purr grew louder. A whimper escaped my lips, and I curled my fingers in the fabric of his shirt. The texture was soft, and smooth. But I wanted it gone. I wanted to feel his skin against mine.

No, Lex. Bad thinking. Not a good idea. You can’t get too attached to these men.

“Sounds like a Lexi thing to say.” Footsteps rang in my ears as the man walked away, leaving me with Miko and my thoughts.

Lexi.

There was only one person in my entire life who called me Lexi.

Antonio.

My eyes snapped open, and I pushed away from Miko. “Who was that?” I exclaimed, falling to the floor in my haste to scramble away.

“You know, Lexi.”

I curled into a ball, tears already filling my eyes. But I refused to let them fall. I’d already shed too many tears for this man.
