Oh God, this is really happening.

“Yes.”

“Are you good with me picking you up at six?” he asks softly, and I nod. “All right.” He looks up when it starts to rain harder. “You should get inside.”

“Okay.” I don’t move, and he doesn’t either. Realizing he’s not going to go until I do, I take him in for a second more just to confirm I’m not imagining this moment, then book it to my front door and use my key to let myself inside. When the door is closed and locked, I get up on my tiptoes and watch him walk away until he’s out of sight, feeling excited for the first time in a very long time.

CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Kicking off my sneakers next to the front door, I head to my bedroom, strip out of my wet clothes, and put on my robe, then grab my cell and dial Emma’s number. As it rings, I walk down the hall, picking up toys as I go.

“Hey,” she answers. “How was drop-off?”

“Naomie was there.”

“I’m sorry. It sounded like you said Naomie was at Bowie’s house when you went to drop off your son to his father.” she hisses as I dump the handful of toys I’m holding into the toy basket in the living room.

“You didn’t mishear me.”

“Seriously?”

“Yep.”

“God, Bowie is such a dick.”

“Agree.” I sigh.

“Are you okay?”

“I had a slight breakdown in the car when I left, but I’m better now.” I plop down on the couch. “I just wasn’t expecting to see her, and it didn’t help that Kingston had already had a meltdown about going to his dad’s, then he latched on to me, because he didn’t want to stay once we got there.”

“It’s hard on him.”

“It is.” I lean my head back and close my eyes.

“Did Naomie say anything to you?”

“Not a word, but the look she gave me spoke volumes.”

“I hate her.”

“I wish I didn’t.” I let out a breath. “She’s obviously not going anywhere, and I don’t want to hate the woman who could potentially be my son’s stepmom someday.”

“Don’t say that.”

“What? That I wish I didn’t hate her, or that she could be Kingston’s stepmom?”

“Both.”

“It would be easier if I liked her, if I could forge a relationship with her. And you and I both know Bowie could marry her. It’s obvious he cares about her.”

“I guess so, but you have the right to not like her, M. I mean, she did sleep with your husband.”

“I know.” I sigh. “I just wish things were different.”

“Maybe one day they will be.”

“Yeah, maybe,” I agree.

“Enough about Naomie and Bowie. Are you excited about your date tonight?”

“Oh no.” My stomach sinks. I don’t know how I forgot about Calum, but I totally did.

“Oh no, what?” she asks, and I cringe. “Please tell me you’re not going to cancel on him again.”

“I am,” I whisper.

“Miranda.” She sighs.

“Tucker was here waiting for me when I got home.”

“What?” she shrieks. “Why didn’t you lead with that? What did he say? It better be good.”

“He told me that he spent five days convincing himself to stay away, but when he landed in Nashville, he drove straight to my house.”

“Ughhh,” she groans. “I don’t want to like that, but I do.”

“I know,” I whisper.

“So, you’re going out with him?”

“He’s picking me up at six.” My stomach twists just thinking about it. “I’m so nervous.”

“Don’t be, it’s just a date. If it sucks, you don’t have to see him again, and if it goes well, maybe you’ll get laid.”

“Don’t freak me out!” I cry.

“Why would you be freaked out?”

“What if I’m bad in bed and that’s why Bowie cheated? Plus, my body has changed so much since having Kingston.”

“Shut your mouth. Bowie is an idiot, M, and him cheating had nothing to do with your sex life and everything to do with him being a douchebag. I’m sure if I googled it, even porn stars get cheated on, and they are sex professionals.”

“Sex professionals?” I smile.

“Yes, and even if I don’t know from experience, I’m sure you’re amazing in bed. You’re probably the best.”

“Right.” I laugh.

“And yes, your body has changed, but in the best ways. Your boobs are bigger, and so is your ass, and last I checked, men love both of those things.”

“Whatever.”

“So, what are you wearing?”

“I don’t know. I haven’t thought about it.”

“I’ll come help you get ready.”

“You don’t need to do that.”

“I know, but I’m still coming over.”

“Okay,” I give in, because having her here will keep me distracted. Plus, she’s the best hype woman around.

“All right, I’ll see you in a few. I need to run some errands, then I’ll be over.” She hangs up after saying “I love you,” and I stare at my phone for a few minutes before I work up the courage to pull up Calum’s number. As I stare at it, I think about sending him a text, but I don’t want to be that person, so I hit Call. While it rings, I hope he doesn’t answer. I mean, I know it’s messed up, but it would be easier to just leave a message.
