“I would really love that.”

My stomach rumbles.

“I’ll hurry,” he laughs, running out the door and closing it behind him.

This feels like kismet. I’m so drawn to him, and after our chemistry finally erupted, I know more than ever that I want to stay and see where things could go between us.

I remember one thing, and that thing is the treasure. Hurrying to get dressed, I put on my little yellow, polka-dot bikini and royal-blue sundress with matching flipflops. With a bit of mouse and mascara, I’m ready to go.

Glad I decided to let my hair dry naturally, I step out into the ocean breeze. The hot Florida sun heats my skin instantly.

This must be what they mean by all the feels. I feelall the feels, right now, blissed out from an epic orgasm. The memory is still fresh in my mind, and excitement builds in my belly.

Buckle up, ladies and gents. Today will be a wild ride.

Meno

After a hardy breakfast of waffles, bacon and plenty more coffee, Milo and I check in on Grand Rapids animals then hit the water. Under the pounding summer sun, the kayak goes in with a splash.

“Do you ever get used to Christmas year round?” I ask in the empty silence as we row out to Lovers’ Cove, loaded up with everything we’ll need for our epic treasure hunt.

Milo takes a moment to stop rowing and pulls on his beard with a smile.

“No. I honestly love it. I even decorate my beard for all the events the island puts on”

“Let me guess… It’s your favorite holiday?”

“Yep. When I was little, my family would spend Christmas here with Soren’s.”

“Every year?”

“Every single year of my entire life. They bought a big house here with like twelve bedrooms or some shit. It’s huge, but when we all get together, it suddenly feels small.”

He laughs lightly, happy memories dancing in his eyes.

“You’re so lucky. I asked Santa for a big family when I was little because Christmas was always just me. My nanny spent the holiday with her parents, but my parents didn’t spend it with me. They sent me gifts from a tropical location and wished me the best day ever,” I say with the same fake enthusiasm I feel. The day is so lovely. I shouldn’t dump my sad childhood in the kayak.

Quickly reaching for a new topic, I point the cove’s old mangrove trees. “Oh, look. What kind of bird is that?”

He continues to paddle us inside the cove, without answering. Did I make it weird? I feel like I made it weird.

“For what it’s worth, Meno, you have a big family now. No matter what, okay?”

My eyes snap to his, shocked by his words so much I’m choking back tears. Sensing that I need a moment, he starts talking about the damn bird.

“That was a egret, native to the keys.”

“Thank you,” I whisper, but he hears me and nods. Those dark eyes of his look at me differently, but not with pity as I’d assumed he would. No, it’s something else. Softer.

“You ready for this?”

I nod, and my mood lightens with the sudden spike of adrenaline. Milo pulls us up to the spot where I saw the chest yesterday and sets up a bright flashlight that reaches every shadow.

“Yes!” I exclaim, ready to find this gold. He hands me the wedge, and I almost drop it. “You want me to do it?”

“I just thought you wanted to.” He looks at me as if I, too, should have assumed I’m capable of bending back these thick, heavy roots.
