Her heart thundered in her chest.

Hannah’s eyes flitted to his mouth as his lips pursed slightly. “Will,” she started, trailing off in a breathy sigh.

His hand snaked along her neck, cradling her jaw as his thumb slid over her cheek. She leaned into the contact, her eyes falling closed at the intense pleasure of the gentle contact. Had she realized she was so starved for touch?

She felt Will shifting on the bed, moving toward her. She opened her eyes to find him inches away from her face, his expression serious and his focus moving from her mouth to her eyes.

“You’re so much more than I expected,” he whispered. He held her there for a moment, watching her expression.

Slowly, ever so slowly, he moved toward her. Hannah knew she could stop it at any moment, but pushing Will away wasn’t something she could begin to bring herself to consider. She’d never wanted to kiss someone so badly. She closed her eyes again.

CHAPTEREIGHTEEN

Every cellin Will’s body was on red alert as he moved toward Melanie. Even with her sleepy expression and tear-streaked face, she was beautiful. And as much as he knew better, he was drawn to her so completely that everything else was falling to the wayside.

He circled his thumb over her cheek, closing the small distance between them until it was almost imperceptible.

“Hey, Will– Oh.”

In an instant, Will was across the room, his heart wildly trying to escape his chest while he shot daggers with his eyes at Tank and his ill-timed interruption.

“Joey’s on the phone,” Tank declared before turning around and leaving. At least it hadn’t been Pierce. He would have never heard the end of it.

Will stared at the empty doorway for a moment before turning back to Melanie on the rumpled bed. How had he gotten so far away?

He couldn’t read her expression, and he definitely wasn’t sure what to do now. He wanted to go back to her side. But it felt awkward.

“I-uh…”

“It’s okay,” she said. “Go talk to Joey.” She shrugged and looked around the room. “You know where to find me.” She was smiling, but it didn’t quite reach her eyes. Was she disappointed they hadn’t kissed? Or relieved?

“Maybe you should come grab a bite to eat,” he said, holding out his hand like a peace offering. He didn’t want her to think he regretted what had just almost happened.

Will helped her to her feet, staying in place so she pressed close to him when she stood. Her head reached to mid-chest, and he looked down at her. Her eyes met his, a hint of hurt and sadness in them. But still, there was trust in the depths. He considered dipping his head and claiming her lips with his own.

“There’s something you need to know,” she said, her voice laced with hesitation.

“Will!” The deep bellow from Tank came from the living room.

Right. Joey was waiting.

“We’ll talk later, okay?” He waited until she finally nodded her agreement. He let go of her hand and stepped back, missing her closeness almost immediately.

When he got to the living room, Tank tossed him his cell phone. No emotion crossed Tank’s face. Whatever his thoughts on the scene he’d witnessed, he wasn’t sharing them.

“Gilbert,” he said. His eyes were on Melanie as she moved around the kitchen, ducking into the fridge and helping herself to food.

“What took you so long? This is important.”

“Then get on with it, Joey,” he said. Immediately, he regretted his harshness. “How’s Kensington?”

“He’ll live. Bit of a recovery ahead, but everything is going to work out. I’ve got intel for you, but it’s a dead drop.”

“Come on, Joey. Are we in East Berlin?”

“Take it or leave it, Square. A friend at the Secret Service got us the unofficial recording of the president’s calls that day. The ones that instigated the schedule change and led to her being at the hotel that day.”

Will pulled his fist into his side in celebration. “That’s awesome. How did you get it?
