“Dude, what happens in the firehall, stays in the firehall, right guys?”

Nick nods. The other firefighters agree.

And Aziz, though he looks utterly confused, says, “Power secrets go to the grave, sir.” Adding after a pause, “Mr. Colt.”

“Thank you. James, please stay and enjoy the evening. I’d appreciate at least two hours alone with Virginia before you return to the house.”

My security detail nods his understanding and without another word, I walk toward the door. Virginia is right behind me. She tries to kiss me in the stairwell, but I shake my head. “Not here.” But once we’re in the empty meeting room on the first floor, I take her in my arms and we kiss like nobody’s watching.

“As much as I want to throw you over my shoulder and carry you back to the house, I need you to pretend I’m Colt while we’re in public. I’ll explain it all once we’re home.”

Virginia moans. “It’s a fifteen-minute walk. Not even holding hands? I don’t think I can do that, Will. ”

“You don’t know how happy that makes me. But this is a really critical ‘short-term pain for long-term gain’ situation.”

Turns out Virginia is a damn fast power walker. We make it up the mile-long hill from the firehall to the house at the edge of the community in under ten minutes. She’s breathing hard, but not as heavily as I plan to make her pant.

“Shower and then I’ll explain everything,” I say, opening the door.

She stops at the entryway and puts her hands on her hips.

“No,” she says.

“No?”

“No,” she repeats.

My heart drops into my gut and my abdominal muscles twist until I feel like I might have to dial 9-1-1.

“Virginia,” I plead.

“A five-minute shower, one hour and forty-five minutes of love making. And then we can talk.” She steps through the doorway. “But I already understand.”

My stomach releases my heart and it bounces back into my chest so hard it forces all the air from my lungs. I exhale a month’s worth of tension.

Virginia grabs my hand and pulls me upstairs. She tries to enter the master bedroom, but when I block her, she looks panicked.

“Seriously, Will, I forgive whatever lie you told. You don’t have to explain.”

I laugh, relief rolling over me in waves. “It’s not that. I gave this room to James. I couldn’t bear being in it without you. We’re down the hall.”

The shower takes much longer than five minutes, but that’s okay because as soon as our clothes are off and our bodies are pressed together, Virginia could have been reciting the news from Podunk, USA and I’d still have been in my version of heaven.

I soap and wash every inch of her body, never taking my eyes off her curves and her freckles, her small scars from misadventures of youth and the spot that I know when my tongue touches just right will make Virginia squirm.

“All clean,” I say, feeling some regret at having to stop this focused attention.

“My turn.”

Virginia does me. And then, with just one word, she undoes me.

“Mine,” she whispers against my ear.

I shut off the water and step out of the shower first, wrapping her in a towel and drying her. “Don’t move a muscle,” I order, “because you’re mine, and tonight I am going to make damn sure you know it all the way to the core of your being.”

Virginia shivers. “I love it when you own my core.”

I slap her ass. “Bed.”
