“Apparently, just up the street to the park where we’ll be enjoying a chocolate milkshake. I brought one for you, if you’d like.”

“No, thank you, sir.”

I am disappointed not to be forced to share with Virginia, so I hand my milkshake to the doorman. “This is for you. Chocolate milkshake. If you don’t want it, that’s fine. But I hope you enjoy it.”

Having my hands free while walking beside Virginia “Can’t Stop Imagining Her Naked” Beach is torture. She holds her milkshake in the hand closest to me and when she takes her first sip, she moans.

Kill me now.

“That is … seriously, what does your chef put in this food? How is it possible that a chocolate milkshake can taste so good? I mean, it’s milk and chocolate ice cream. Why do I have the sensation I’m drinking liquid happiness?”

“Hey, give me that.” I reach for her hand and hold it under mine a few seconds longer than necessary before taking the cup from her and putting the straw to my lips. I close my eyes, take a long pull, and swirl the drink so it coats my tongue before I swallow. She’s not wrong. “I’d like to tell you it’s my company that makes this so good, but the truth is, it’s the mix of house-made vanilla ice cream, chocolate ganache, and a pinch of cinnamon and chili powder.”

“Oh my god, must have more.” Virginia reaches to grab the cup, but I hold it high over her head. “Give it back. Get your own. I made a mistake and don’t want to share.”

“Too late.”

She sighs. “Fine.”

I lower the cup and rest it on top of her head, within her reach. She wraps her hand over mine and we walk like this, hand-in-hand, for several yards before I’m willing to give up the connection.

Virginia thanks me with a hint of a smile before she wraps her lips around the that fucking lucky straw again.

The tree-lined, gravel path that snakes through a park covers about four square blocks—not huge, but big enough that the sounds of the city are muffled by the trees and distance from the street.

“Do you have a particular destination in mind?”

“Mm-hmm.” Her mouth is full and she moans again.

Note to self: No more milkshakes with Virginia. Or burgers. Or onion rings. Does she moan her delight with all the food she eats? I debate whether I actually want to put myself through the torture of finding out.

“Mmm, so, so good.”

I decide I not only want to know if she moans when she eats steak and salad, but also what noises she makes with other kinds of pleasure.

“There’s a bench just across the way, over there.” She points. “The ground is soft. It’s a perfect place to take off our shoes and wiggle our toes in the dirt.”

“You’re serious about bare feet?”

“Mm-hmm.” Her mouth is full again. She hands the milkshake to me. “No more. This is better than sex.” She gasps as soon as she says the word.

I would like to prove you wrong.

I check behind us. Bruce is at a comfortable distance, not able to overhear our conversation, but close enough to be at my side within two seconds. I don’t expect him to be needed; security is an unwelcome but required precaution for a high-profile billionaire. Sadly.

And even though Vancouver isn’t known for its paparazzi, they’re here, hiding in plain sight, just like any city that is home to the rich and famous. Given my face is as recognizable as most A-list actors, I prefer to avoid any chance of being photographed. So it’s a big deal, going out in the daylight with a woman wearing a dress that screams, “Hey, look over here!” yet in the humblest way.

We reach the bench and sit. Virginia immediately undoes her sandals and runs her feet over the grass. “It feels so good. What are you waiting for? Do you need me to take your runners off for you?” She stands and starts to kneel in front of me.

Bad idea. I pull off my hat and drop it into my lap.

“Get up, you brat.” I shake my head and direct her back to the bench beside me. I undo my Nikes, pull off my socks, and place my bare feet on the ground.

Then, I wiggle my toes. The dirt, sand, earth, whatever it is, gives a little.

“It’s not terrible,” I admit.

“Come on! Let’s walk in the grass.” She takes my hand and leads me back to the park we’ve just walked through. “Doesn’t it feel amazing? Grounding?”
