Yet, despite my feelings that have been at an all-time high, I’m not ready to just move back in and pretend it didn’t happen.

“You headin’ back to your friend’s house?”

“Yeah.” I drop the hospital gown to the floor and put on my bra with my back turned to him. “I’m going to go take a nap.”

“You haven’t been sleeping well.” It’s not a question but a fact, and he’s not wrong. Begrudgingly without him, I toss and turn while searching for him in the middle of the night. I’ve become so dependent on his comfort and the way I feel in his arms that being alone has been awful.

“I’ve been alright,” I lie, pulling my shirt over my head, thankful that he can’t see my face.

“Molly…”

I hate that when he calls my name my whole body reacts to his will—I could never deny him anything.

Not even now.

Not when we still have things unsettled between us and I’m not sure where we go from here.

“Kai, I promise you. I’m fine.”

“I’m not,” he says matter-of-factly. “I want my woman home. I want to get this shitty talk out of the way so I can promise you that I’ll listen. I need a code word or something to snap me back into this moment. You may have written that story for me, Molly. But I’m still a broken man with a lot of issues. I’m working through them but I can’t do it without you.”

“You’re not all to blame, Kai.” I reach down for my leggings. “I should’ve cornered you or something. I just allowed you to be distant. You’re the type of man that needs to be pushed.”

“Probably.”

“And then I just ran.” I pull my pants up my legs and waist, then finally turn around to face the man who holds my entire heart and soul in his hands. “But you drive me fucking crazy.”

“I tend to do that,” he replies with a flat expression.

“And with this baby, how are we going to do this moving forward?”

“Don’t write shit about me.”

My lips coil into a smile because, sure, that probably would be the easiest way. However, it’s not going to solve any other problems that don’t include that. “I’m a journalist, Kai. I write.”

“There’s more interesting things to write about other than me.”

“Then, our love story?” I perk a brow, watching him stand by the door to block anyone from entering while I’m dressing. “Isn’t that something worth talking about amongst ourselves?”

“If you promise to keep it that way.”

This man.

After all the trials and tribulations, I can see each and every single way he tries to make this right.

Even if it still hurts him.

I immediately nod. “I can promise you that every day. Though…this little debacle made a plot twist and all my inner thoughts are going to come out on paper with this.”

Kai glowers at me a bit. “Skip it.”

“I can’t.” I shrug. “You’re a main character in this story.”

“Do you have to?”

No.

I could argue that not writing about it at all and not thinking back on it won’t do us any favors. I can’t help but mess with Kai sometimes.
