Of all the jobs in San Bernardino, I did not just apply for Kai’s.

I blinkseveraltimes to wash the vision of him from my eyes, but I’m met with dark blues that I haven’t even begun to forget.

When he sees me, his feet halt on a dime and it’s the most tense and awkward position I’ve ever, everbeen in.

And to say that he’snotprepared for an interview is evident because the white shirt he’s wearing is stained with black streaks of something and his hands are filthy. It runs up and blends with the black tattoos that litter his forearms and wrists and—fuck me.

I can’t help but just gawk at him because—when I thought he looked good before—I think I prefer the dirty version of Kai myself.

Wait, what did she just say his name is?

“I thought that was tomorrow,” Kai says flatly, finally breaking his gaze off me and to the petite blonde a few feet ahead.

Is he fucking married?

My heart is swallowed up by my gut and I begin to feel all sorts of nauseous.

He said he was never going to get married again.

But did that mean because he was already married, or that he just didn’t wish to?

“No,” the blonde replies flatly. “I told you earlier it was today.”

Kai adjusts his jaw but gives her a curt nod, reaching for a soiled rag off the edge of the car’s fender and beginning to wipe his hands clean.

If you want to call it that.

The blonde pivots and beams at me, doing nothing to settle down my insides.

Please don’t tell me you’re with him.

“I’ll see you when you’re both done.” She begins to stride back into the house but not before stopping at my side and muttering, “You’re going to do great.”

Girl, you don’t even want to know the things he and I did.

I mean, she might, but this is like the extension of how bad my luck has been running right now.

Especially if they’retogether.

“Nanny, huh?”

I glance back up at Kai, finding those blue depths honed placidly back in on me. It takes me a few seconds to find my words, but they eventually make their way past my lips.

“Was Kai a fake name you gave me?”

He doesn’t break a smile or anything more than what he’s giving me now, which is emotionless. “That’s my legal name.”

Then what the hell is Odin?

Of course, he doesn’t volunteer any more information so I’m stuck with wondering about it.

That and a bunch of other things.

“So,” he says. “We’ll make this quick so we can save each other some time.” He glances at the motor inside his car as if inspecting something real quick before saying, “I’m not going to hire you.”

What?

I gape at him, first for his directness. And secondly, because he hasn’t even allowed me to say more than a few words.
