“What?”

“I’m going to start going upstairs at five so that you can spend time with the girls and not hide outside.”

My jaw locks that she sawrightthrough what I’ve been doing.

It’s so evident that a woman who doesn’t know me very well can see that I’ve been avoiding her like the plague.

And I don’t want to havethatsort of relationship, but I’m highly attracted to her and I never thought I was going to see her again.

“Why would you do that?” I glance over at her staring at me. “You’re not on a curfew.”

“Because when I’m around,” she claims, “you’re not.”

“I’m busy.”

“You’re not that busy. Unless you became a mechanic within the last eight days that I’ve been here.”

“It’s a hobby.”

“It’s a getaway.”

Alright, enough of the callouts.

Straightening my spine, I fix Molly with a glower because I’m not the one who needs to be under interrogation, nor am I going to be. “Why don’t you stop analyzing me and pay attention to what the girls need?”

“Because when it comes to the grand scheme of things, Kai…if you’re not present and it affects them, I need to handle it.”

What the fuck?

“So you’re saying that I’m a problem?”

Molly inhales a bit before spitting out her next words, using caution because I know she can sense my already growing irritation. “I’m saying that the girls miss you. And they feel it when you’re not there.”

I’m soaking in her words, I am.

However, it doesn’t feel good when you have someone who just entered your life and your children’s lives pretty much tell you that you halfway suck as a parent.

“Anything else?” Molly slowly shakes her head. “Thanks for the food.”

I return to my car, but she doesn’t give me any reprieve when she speaks again.

“Do you mind if I buy Bria the Barbie helicopter for her birthday? I’m trying to win brownie points.”

Lord knows she’s going to need them.

“That’s fine.”

“And did you need any help with her birthday party? Because I’m great at those.”

“I was going to hire a party planner.”

“Ugh.” My brows knit as I take Molly back in. “Let me do it. Party planners are a rip-off.”

“You don’t know my kid.”

“I know enough.” She lifts her shoulders. “And I know what girls like.”

She apparently knows what a lot of people like because that night with her was everything I could’ve dreamt of and more.
