“And what would women want to know about Odin Wolfe? I don’t suspect you write about boxers or any other sort of sports in your company?”

She chuckles as if what I said was funny, but it’s not.

Aprille isusingme for an exclusive story that I’m only going to get paid pennies for.

“Probably just the personal relationship kinda stuff,” she conveys. “That’s if they get past the photos of him.”

Yeah, I’m not a fan.

Not of this idea or how she stalked me down to talk to me about it either. How she’d use me to gain something that no one else seems to be able to do and then hand me DIY articles about making vases out of mason jars from the dollar store.

“I’m going to have to respectfully turn this down,” I say. “But thanks for the call, Apr—”

“Well, wait, we haven’t even spoken about salary yet.”

I don’t care.

I’m not about to write about Kai and make it look like I’m banking off his success to further my writing career.

“I don’t think there’s a price—”

“We’re looking at almost six figures, Miss Ryland. All we want is a piece about his life, what he likes to do, a small little insight about who he is behind the violence.”

Still not bought.

Plus, even if I was contemplating it, I don’t think Kai would appreciate me asking him when he told me just the other night that he was trying to get out of the spotlight so that he could just relax.

I don’t tell Aprille that because it’d be a breaking story that would possibly further her company by reporting it first and I’d rather cut my whole arm off.

“That sounds nice,” I convey flatly. “But I’m not interested.”

“You’re not?” Aprille actually sounds confused and I know I speak perfect English. However, maybe it’s coming out in weird lingo since I’m so tired even though it sounds fine in my head.

“Nope.”

“Well…what if we offer a bonus for the story? I’m sure due to his reputation that it’ll be hard to convince him, but I believe you’d write it beautifully. And he can read it before we hit the publish button. We’d obviously want him happy with it.”

Lady, that’s never going to happen.

“Thanks for the call, Aprille. But I’m still passing on the opportunity.”

“You’re sure?”

“Yes, have a great day.”

“But—” I hang up on her, not wanting to waste another few seconds telling her for the millionth time that I’m not doing it.

I won’t betray Kai’s trust and put his life out into the world.

However, I’m intrigued about how that story would play out and how I’d start it. How easily the words would form. It feels natural, and I’ve been here for well almost two months now.

Grabbing my laptop off the coffee table, I open up a new document and stare at the blinking cursor.

This will never see the light of day.

This is strictly for me.

Maybe one day I’ll give it to Kai as a gift for all the things I observed while staying here and all the things he made me feel.
