“Good,” he replied and gave her a half smile. He’d have to catch up with Gunner at some point, but honestly, everything about this job could just go to hell.

“Where’s Nita?” Jackal asked, and Ryder suspected the smug expression had to do with guessing how intimate their relationship was.

“Somewhere safe,” he replied.

“She might need to come here,” Montgomery said, swinging back to face the table with a scowl.

“Why would that be?” he asked.

Jackal snorted and Montgomery said, “Are you serious? She’s the one who found the body.”

Ryder glared from one man to the other.

“Has the location of the body been secured?” he asked.

Jackal’s eyes held a glint of steely determination. “It’s been left as Nita found it, since it’s evidence,” he replied, his voice laced with the seriousness of the situation. “Which is why the detective will want to talk to her. Where is this safe place you’ve got her?”

Ryder’s gaze hardened. “She can speak to police in her own time once she’s recovered.”

“I’m sure the detective will understand,” Fontana said sympathetically. “Lindsey’s picking him up from the front gate.”

“Just one guy?” Ryder asked, looking at Montgomery.

“For now, they’re sending one person. Someone who understands the importance of discretion when it comes to Cavendish,” Montgomery explained.

“Someone who’s very interested in keeping a certain senator’s dealings with Cavendish out of the limelight,” Fontana explained with a small smile.

“But has Ms. Meyer checked in with anyone?” Jackal asked with a mocking smile at Montgomery. “Has she returned any of your calls?”

“No,” he said in a clipped voice, glaring at Jackal. “And wipe that smirk off your face.”

“She knows,” Fontana said, taking her phone out of her pocket. “She got your message and called Georgia.”

“What did she say?” Montgomery asked, her voice slightly sulky.

“She’s on her way back from the Caymans and obviously doesn’t want the police involved,” Fontana replied.

“Shieße!” Montgomery barked, rubbing his chin. “Don’t tell me, she said we should just all go out there and bury the body so nobody would find it.”

Fontana snickered but didn’t reply, making Ryder wonder if Hartley’s response was some version of that.

“Cavendish is everything to her,” Jackal said, punching his finger on the table to make his point. “As her husband, you should know that.”

“As her husband, let me tell you that you can fuck off,” Montgomery muttered, turning back to look out the window.

Fontana’s phone buzzed and she looked down at the screen.

“Lindsay and the detective are here. Are we all good with what we’re going to tell him? That one of our staff was doing a routine sweep of the property and fell onto the body?” Fontana asked.

Montgomery turned around.

“Yes. That’s what I will explain,” he said, then looked at Ryder. “You?”

“I’m going to tell the truth as I know it,” he replied, placing his hands flat on the table.

A smirk danced across Jackal’s face.

“This is going to be entertaining,” Jackal said.
