As the misty morning air buzzed past him, he decided the fence fix could wait. The thought of some intruder lurking near the testing facility made him crank the throttle a little harder. He didn’t want to picture the two women opening a door and finding a desperate, tweaked-out freak ready to pounce, but he did.

At least a tweaker would be easy to spot. Worse would be a calm but deadly man, ready to assault either of the two women who wanted to protect Cavendish’s IP.

Nita pulled out a chair and sat at the desk in the control room. The wide window looked over the testing room, which resembled a home theatre, although with only one plush chair in the center. Behind it was a metal box where the cables from the bio-haptics suit would be plugged in.

Standing in front of the chair was the testing manager, Fontana. She explained the test to the first of Magdalena’s friends, another gorgeous super model from Italy.

Nita never sat in on the bio-haptics testing. It wasn’t part of her job description, and honestly, while some of their clients had wildly interesting sexual preferences—a good reason their affluent clients paid Cavendish to satisfy them—she only cared about her own test results.

Today, though, she had to act the role of host, since none of the owners were on site. And she had to act like she had her shit together, now that Ryder had found another fence breach. She’d texted her closest Cavendish friend and co-owner, Becca, but she hadn’t responded yet.

“Wait, wait, wait,” the tall, skinny blonde stammered from down in the testing room.

Nita leaned forward to see the two women standing near the testing chair and smiled.

Fontana was holding one of the internal sensors and she knew exactly what was running through the uptight blonde’s mind as. Covered head to toe in a hot pink latex suit, she held her hands up in protest.

“I’m supposed to put that where?” she asked.

“Oh boy, this will be a shocking surprise,” Nita murmured as she glanced at the clipboard.

Seta Russo.

Nita had buzzed the woman’s rental car in at the front gate and had had to decipher her heavy Italian accent as she told the story of her name. Something Nita imagined she did a lot.

According to the model, Seta was Italian for silk, because her mother said she was born with the smoothest skin she’d ever felt… blah, blah, blah. Nita cursed herself for asking about the name, doing her best to act as a friendly hostess.

Personally, Nita thought the woman had horrible skin. She could have recommended an excellent over-the-counter toner and moisturizing combo that would have cleared up the redness and light acne, but that went above and beyond her job of getting these women in and out of the testing before her derby practice.

“Hello?” she heard Ryder’s voice echo from the lobby of the facility, and she left the control room to find him.

When she did, his serious expression reminded her of the potential intruder they were fucking dealing with… again!

“Any sign of bad guys?” she asked when she opened the locked glass door, letting him in to the hallway where the testing room and offices were located.

“I’ve checked the perimeter and everything seems clear. No footprints anywhere, and the breach wasn’t big enough for a vehicle of any kind to get in. I want to check this place out, just to be safe. I assume you haven’t heard or seen anything out of place?”

“Not at all,” Nita replied, relieved he’d found nothing wrong in the building.

“Have all the testing clients arrived?” he asked.

“Two of them have,” she replied. “One is done and in Fontana’s office. The other one is about to start her testing. The other two will arrive together in about an hour.”

“Ah, the infamous testing,” he said, raising a derogatory eyebrow at her.

“Ah, another male skeptic,” she replied, giving him his look back. She motioned for him to follow her and led him into the control room.

Fontana stood at the desk now, preparing the software to run the protocol.

“Fontana, this is Ryder. He’s doing the security for Magdalena’s event,” Nita said.

Fontana glanced over her shoulder and gave him a nod.

“Nice to meet you,” Fontana said in a tight voice.

“Something not right?” Nita asked.
