He marched to the men and grabbed Jackal’s coat, jerking him away like he weighed nothing.

“Settle down. It’s Montgomery,” he told the man.

“I found the grave and footprints,” Jackal said, panting. “I smelled—”

“We know,” Ryder said, positioning himself between the two men as Montgomery got to his feet. “We’ll have to call the police.”

“You can’t. It’s the last thing Ms. Meyer wants,” Jackal argued.

“What the fuck do you know about what my wife wants?” Montgomery demanded, stepping toward Jackal. Ryder splayed a hand out on Montgomery’s chest to hold him back.

“Your ex-wife,” Jackal spit out.

“Not an ex yet!” Montgomery yelled back, surging against Ryder’s hand.

“Hey!” Ryder shouted, his voice bordering on a roar. “Either calm the fuck down or I’m going to ram your heads against each other until you pass out,” Ryder commanded.

She watched both men pause, their faces calming as they realized Ryder wasn’t fucking around.

“Just keep Hartley out of this,” Montgomery growled, backing off of Ryder’s hand.

Jackal looked sullen but his stance relaxed as well.

“Okay,” Ryder said. “So. What the fuck happened tonight?”

“Maybe he can start by telling us why he’s on the property? He was fired,” Montgomery commented.

“I could say the same thing about you. Why are you here?” Jackal countered.

Ryder sighed, putting his hands on his hips.

“Jackal’s been following Rogue and Lawrence,” Nita blurted. “He tracked Rogue here a couple of days ago.”

All three men looked at her, two with looks of surprise, Jackal with one of discomfort. She shrugged. It was time to put all their cards on the table.

“Tracked Rogue? Rogue was AWOL when Becca and Porter tried to find him,” Montgomery said, looking at Jackal with a suspicious frown.

“Those two gave up pretty fast, didn’t they?” Jackal accused, again with a sullen look on his face.

“I’m out of the loop here,” Ryder said, turning to fully face her. “Have you and Jackal been talking?”

“Yes,” she said. “And if he found anything, I was going to bring you into the loop.”

“Really,” Ryder said, the sarcasm thick. “Like tonight? When I assume he texted you to investigate a remote area of the property and stumble into a grave? Or is this somehow a different kind of loop?”

She grimaced.

“Yeah, okay. That’s fair. But in my defense, he told me he thought he saw Montgomery, and he’s a known commodity at Cavendish.”

“You were following me?” Montgomery asked, looking at Jackal.

“I’m following anybody who seems suspicious. And you were lurking around the property, so—” Jackal finished with a shrug.

“I was looking for my wife,” Montgomery explained.

“So was I,” Jackal replied.

“Why would you be looking for Hartley?” Montgomery accused.
