“No, but I’ve got all the signs. I know my body,” she insisted.

He leaned back, his mind spiraling.

He didn’t just want to have a baby with her; he wanted a life with her.

And he was pretty sure she didn’t.

“Ryder,” she growled, putting her hands on the sides of his head. “I need you to fuck me. Now.”

He locked eyes with hers, seeing the strength and independence that made him love her.

And fuck him, he loved her.

He knew nothing would come of it, that they’d go on with their lives on opposite sides of the country, but in that moment he told himself that she loved him, too. He hugged the moment of raw vulnerability and intimacy inside and let his heart take solace in their lovemaking.

Sinking into her, he held her gaze as he buried himself fully, deeply. He let her see everything he felt, touching her cheek and jaw tenderly, unafraid of whatever she was reading in his eyes.

Her eyes were almost black, her lips parting as he pulled slowly out. She angled her hips, allowing his out stroke to brush against her clit. Her pupils expanded even more and she let out a long, sighing moan.

“What the fuck is this?” she whispered, her eyebrows creasing over her eyes as he pressed fully into her again.

“It’s just us, darlin’,” he murmured back, rotating his hips to feel every sweet inch of her.

“How can it feel like this?” she asked, staring at him with genuine concern, as if she couldn’t believe the feelings she was having.

“Because it’s more than sex,” he replied, and slanted his mouth over hers.

Her hands moved over his body as his did the same to hers. He kept her balanced on the wall, but her strong legs moved in a rhythm that matched his hips.

He stroked in and out, increasing his pace until they clung tightly to each other. Their hips moved in short, almost angry jerks until they were panting into each other’s mouths.

“Ahhhh!” she moaned against his lips as his own yell echoed back.

They came together, jerking and rocking in the still-hot spray of the shower. Their bodies slowed and he braced a hand against the wall to soften the weight of his body as he leaned into her.

“I’m not going to lie,” he said into the curve of her neck. “You wreck me.”

Her arms tightened around his back briefly in response.

“Same,” she murmured.

As the water cascaded over them, he felt himself slip out of her. He angled them so the water ran over their bodies, washing the evidence of their lovemaking down the drain.

He helped her splash water onto her belly, supporting her when she twisted and turned to rinse every angle.

A surge of vulnerability welled up in him as he watched her, this tiny but tough woman. The desire to open up to her completely burned in his chest.

He stared at her, then lowered his head to kiss her neck when he couldn’t find the words.

Maybe you shouldn’t tell her,a voice argued in his head.

She’s going to be a lawyer, likely keep working at Cavendish if it survives being a crime scene, and keep on roller derbying.

He was going home to raise his son.

End of story.

“I could stay in here for the rest of my life, except I think my entire body is pruning up,” she murmured, then laughed and gave his shoulder a whack.
