“I’ll need graduation robes before a wedding gown,” my bride-to-be informs her. “This’ll likely be a long engagement.”

No doubt. We’ve agreed that finishing her degree has to take precedence.

“We can have a formal party with dinner and dancing even if you’re not exchanging vows yet,” Trina points out. “And I’ll make you a dress for that, too.”

“Sounds fun to me. I’m always in for a party,” Harrison says with a shrug, and I know he’s placating Trina. She was his wife Jane’s best friend for years before Jane passed away three years ago in a car accident. All of us in his circle have attempted to step in and help, but I suspect Trina has been the one most helpful. Of all of us, Trina has grieved as much as Harrison has.

“So you’ll go with me if I make this party happen?” Trina prods, and Harrison folds like a shit hand of poker. In fact, his grin as he glances at her is more than tolerant, it’s downright indulgent.

“We’ve danced together before. Let’s show them how it’s done.”

Trina beams at him, and something makes me start feeling really excited about this party. I lean in to my future wife and whisper in her ear. “You ready for a party?”

She giggles and whispers back. “You know it. And I get to wear a new dress.”

All I can think of in that moment is getting her out of that new dress after all the toasts and fun with our friends. And I knew I’d adore her for the rest of our lives.
