What if it’s now ruined forever?

I’m sitting in silence with a load of worry on my mind when my doorbell rings, and I’m relieved to have the distraction. Tugging my door open without taking the time to peek through the peephole—that’s one benefit of a safe, small town—and discover none other than Harrison Walcott storming over my threshold.

Dammit.

“Harrison,” I squeak out. “What a pleasant surprise.”

But Harrison seems to be hunting for something. Or as it turns out, someone.

“Where is he?”

“Who?”

He frowns at me.

“Your boyfriend. Isn’t he supposed to be here right now?”

I look at him in confusion and shock. “Boyfriend? What do you mean?”

“I heard you today.”

Still confused, I’m trying to figure out what he means. Then it hits me. He overheard me with Ms. McManus. Well, shit. I open my mouth to speak, not knowing what I’ll say but I don’t get a chance.

“What the… Did he stand you up?”

I watch Harrison’s features, which have now slid from a frown into a full scowl, and understand that I have two options here. Either I can dig myself into an even deeper hole, or I can come clean.

I’m just not sure what decision is the right one.

In the end, I let my pride take over and dig deeper. I’m not certain it’s the right thing to do, but for some reason, I’m just not ready to admit I had to make up a boyfriend. Even though it was in extenuating circumstances, I do feel the need to let this go on a bit longer.

“Hey simmer down. He didn’t stand me up… he’s just not a good fit. We, um, we didn’t really click. He left already.”

Harrison starts to nod slowly, then he quirks his mouth to the side. “Well, that’s too bad.”

“Yeah, it is.”

He closes the distance between us, taking my upper arms in his hands. I like the feel of the contact despite how tense things are between us right now.

“Trina, why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because… I don’t know. I guess I didn’t think it really matters.” I honestly don’t know what to say because I doubt anything I say will make sense. And I’m not sure why he’s here and why he was so angry when he got here. “So, why are you here? And why are you mad?”

“I can’t believe you didn’t tell me you’re seeing someone.” He let out a long breath.

“And that’s it? You just thought you needed every detail of my life?”

He drops his shoulders and sighs. “I didn’t mean it like that. I just didn’t expect it.”

“Well, the truth is that it was time. But this guy, um, he wasn’t the one.” I life my chin to try to at least feel like I’m in control.

“Time for what?”

“Time for me to find someone.”

He nods again. Seems like all he’s doing is asking questions and nodding.

“So you’re ready to fall in love?”
