I blinked and tried to figure him out. Clearly, Holdenwas a better person than I would ever be. Forgiveness was not something I doled out. Not now, not ever. Hurt ran deeper in my veins than any visible scar.

But Holden? How was it possible that? He was just–

The plane violently shifted again, and a male voice cut through the quiet atmosphere over the PA. “Cabin crew, please be seated.”

Chapter Five

In a flash, the cabin crew disappeared from the aisles.

“Is this normal?” I tried to hide the fear creeping into the panic edges of my pitch.

Holden nodded. “Oh yeah. They’ll get pockets of bad air, but it’s just safer if everyone is in their seats for a short spell.”

The cabin lights remained dim, but the passengers stirred, and the mumbles increased as the plane continued to bounce through the air.

It was hard to hold a conversation. Every time I went to speak, the plane dipped, or did whatever it was when it hit a so-calledpocket of air. I didn’t understand what turbulence was, but I wasn’t a fan of it. All my life, I’d avoided watching movies about airplanes for just this reason.

The plane jumped again, a little more violently than previous bumps.

I reached for Holden’s hand. Right now, I needed the contact.

He didn’t let me down and placed his other hand on top of mine. “It’ll be okay.”

“This… seems… wrong.”

“Nah. It has to do with the mountain air and currents and jet streams. Most likely, the pilot is adjusting the speed and trying to climb above. It’ll be smooth soon, you’ll see.”

I nodded, hoping he was correct in his blasé explanation. It sure didn’t feel like we were rising.

The plane shook again, and I was thrust against the restraints of my seatbelt. My free hand white-knuckled the hand rest as I inhaled sharply to control mybreathing. It was crazy, but I refused to look out the window. Some irrational part of my brain worried the ground was racing up towards us and the rational part didn’t want confirmation.

“Ladies and Gentlemen,” a calm male voice spoke over the PA systemagain. “We’re going to be making an unscheduled stop in Calgary. Cabin crew prepare for imminent landing.”

We looked at the screen on the head rest. The plane’s altitude was dropping, as was my stomach when the plane pitched slightly.

“Is that… normal?”

Holden shrugged, and I took his lack of an answer as a no. Planes don’t make unscheduled stops. Something was up. Something was definitely up.

A few minutes after the announcement, the flight attendant roamed the aisles, taking away the remaining trash and ensuring trays were in their upright and locked positions.

“Excuse me,” I asked as the one flight attendant walked by.

“Yes.” If she was worried, her relaxed demeanour betrayed that. She was the poster child of serenity.

“What happens when we land inCalgary?”

“We wait.”

“That’s it?”

“That’s all I’ve been told.” She backed down the aisle, stopping every couple of feet.

I searched Holden’s face, but he too remained calm and composed. “You’re not bothered by this?”

“Nah. It happens.”

I shook my head.“Like all the time?”
