Still surprised at the way David interacted with my daughter, I shook my head and stared at my sister, popping on a smile. “It’s okay.”

“She wanted to know if you wanted to join us for an ice cream with Mia.” Francesca signed for Vera’s benefit.

I had a pile of projects to finish, but the thought of a sisterly get-together and a lemon crunch ice cream cone was an offer too good to pass up. Even if it was still morning.

“Sure, I’m almost done here.” To my daughter, I smiled and signedten minutes?

Vera nodded, and with a skip headed back outside, the doorbell chiming as she left.

My sister lingered and extended her hand. “I’m Fran. Have we met before?”

He pumped her hand. “David Dean, and no, I don’t believe so.”

I watched in rapt attention, waiting for him to hit on the prettiest Normandy sister, but he didn’t. Instead, prim and proper, he returned his hand to his pocket.

“David Dean of Birch Bay Burgers?” Her smile widened and there was a slight spring in her step.

“Does my reputation precede me?” His gaze volleyed between her and me.

“Maybe. You’re the one she’s planning this huge mural for.”

Thank you for not spilling the beans.

“That’s me.” He had the good sense to let a sly grin tickle the edges of his smile.

“You’ve picked well. Erin will make something gorgeous for your place. You won’t be disappointed.”

I might, however, die of embarrassment before the project got finished if she kept going on.

“I honestly don’t think that’s even a remote possibility. From what I’ve seen, Erin does impeccable work.”

Fran almost seemed to be dancing on the spot.

“Vera?” I questioned, hoping she’d take the hint and follow my daughter back into the house, which still hadn’t chimed.

Francesca glanced out the window. “I can see her. She’s checking out the car, but point taken. See you in a few minutes.”

I resumed looking at David. Nope, still didn’t seem to be falling under my sister’s spell. A first for sure.

“Give me ten, and I’ll come join you.”

She left us, leaving the door wide open.

David stood before me, and in my head, I was practically shouting at him to finish asking what he was going to. Which was crazy, because I wasn’t really interested in him, and I had no right to be interested.

“I’ll let you finish up, so you can have some ice cream. Oh, get the Lemon Crunch. It’s to die for.”

“Okay.” I breathed the word out. Lemon Crunch was my all-time favourite.

“Would it be weird if I come by on occasion and see how things are going?”

I swallowed, disappointed in how the end of the question went. “Sure. But if you don’t mind giving me a heads-up first. Mostly to prepare Vera as she won’t likely hear the car pull up.”

“Not a problem.” He meandered to the door, pausing as he turned around. The morning sun put him into a full eclipse, and it was breathtaking. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome. Thankyoufor the business.”

“We’re going to enjoy this project.”
