He tore his gaze away from my phone as he handed it back. Rocking in his chair, he thoughtfully rubbed his chin. “Can you add one to each piece?”

“Absolutely.”

“I’ll pay you extra for your time.”

“No, this was on me. I don’t mind. I wasn’t sure if it would work, and turns out, it did.” I tried to hide my smile with a nonchalant shrug.

“You really have a talent.”

Did he say these things just to see if I’d blush? Because it worked, every single time. I was going to be putty in his hands if he didn’t stop and if I didn’t let the comments just bounce off me. They were just words, and he could be saying them just to say them.

My breath shuddered. “Thank you.”

He rose and looked into the kitchen; a frown formed turning his grin upside down. “Just a second, please.”

Without a word, he descended the staircase and marched over to one of the stainless-steel workstations. He pointed and the worker bristled slightly but nodded in agreement with whatever was being said. A moment later, shoulders down, David stepped away and his footsteps grew louder as he ascended into the office.

He ran his hands over his reddened face. “Sorry about that.”

I shook my head. “No worries. We’re at your place of work, you’re entitled to micromanage your staff.” I grinned at the same time as he did.

“This was beyond micromanaging. He messed up, and it was caught before it escalated into a nightmare.”

My jovial tone fell like a rock in the water. “Trust me, it’s all good. I’m just ribbing you.”

I tossed my phone into my purse and shifted back and forth on my feet.

He glanced quickly into the kitchen area and nodded, before returning his attention to me. “Since you’re here and before I forget, I have a date prepared.”

My heart hammered in anticipation.

“How flexible are you with dates and times?”

“Marginally. Depends on Francesca’s availability.” This upcoming weekend was her last shift at the Cowboy Den, so if David had something planned, I’d need to reach out to Adam, or if Mia wasn’t busy then her.

“Sunday? Does that work?”

Guess I’d be asking Adam or Mia. I laughed to myself. “Let me check with my family, and I’ll get back to you.”

He cleared his throat and his Adam’s Apple bobbed. “I await your reply.”

I held my breath and took in his handsome face. “I’ll stop by the store on my way home and let you know.”

“May I have the kitchen make you a lunch before you go?”

“As sweet as that is, no, no thank you. I didn’t come for lunch.” And after the scene I’d just witnessed, it’s best to avoid eating. Not sure what he saw. “Just wanted to show you the butterfly.” I lingered at the doorway, my body begging me to stay, but my head telling me it was time to go – anticipation heightening the pleasure and all that.

“I’ll walk you down.”

I took my time descending to the main floor but rushed through the kitchen. It was like watching a ballet – the performers all moving in synchronicity – and I didn’t want to mess anything up by standing there and being in the way.

At the hostess stand, I stopped and turned.

David was right there, a deepening desire on his face. “Talk soon.”

“Soon.”

I had to force myself to go, and once I was out the door, I raced to my car and over to the bookshop. Adam had better not have any plans.
