“I’d like that.” I cleared my throat as a smile rushed to push my cheeks up nice and high. “Since it’s our first date, I should let you know I have a six-year-old daughter who has hearing issues, and a nosy sister who lives with me, but who I love with all my heart.” I beamed. “Oh, yeah, and a brother who will fight to protect me from anyone who will hurt me.”

“Whew, I’m safe on that.”

“How’s that?”

“Because I will never hurt you.”

My heart actually skipped a beat and tears welled in my eyes again. “And I make the same promise to you.”

“So, we’re doing this? We’re going to start over and try again?”

“Nothing would please me more.”

He leaned closer. “I should warn you though, I’ve been told I am a micromanager, but I am a damn good kisser.”

I moved my lips to within inches of his face. “Prove it.”

He brushed my hair away and cupped his hands around my cheeks. Pulling me close as he bridged the distance, he lightly brushed his lips over mine, teasing me with each ghostly caress. It was wild and intoxicating, and I wanted more, parting my lips just as he breezed over again. As we connected, the kiss turned more powerful, more possessive, and more sensual. I was putty in his capable hands, and if he was okay with all my baggage, then I was his for the taking as I couldn’t wait to be a part of his world.

Epilogue

A month later…

David and I walked hand in hand down Main Street. The air had turned bitterly cold with the approaching winter, and we were huddled beneath our thick jackets, although it seemed to do little with the dampness hanging around.

We were just about at Sylvia’s Bakery, one of our favourite places to have a sweet treat, when Libby burst through the door, mumbling, and waving her arms frantically.

I quickly looked at David but broke our connection as I stepped over to stop Libby. “What’s going on?”

“He knows. He knows.”

I put my arms on her shaking shoulders, and even though she wasn’t wearing a jacket like she should’ve been, I knew she wasn’t trembling from the cold.

“Libby,” I stared into her eyes. “What happened?”

“He knows. He knows why I went after him. He feels betrayed because he thinks I was just after my sister.”

“Libby, honey, you need to slow down. You’re not making any sense.”

“He said it was over, that I used him to get to her.” She avoided making eye contact but did manage to catch her breath. “And while it may be true, somewhere along the lines I fell in love with him, and it can’t be over. I fell in love with him, can you believe it? But he just hung up on me and told me to beat it. But I love him so much.” Like a caged animal, she was trying to free herself from my hold.

I swallowed down a pang of regret, for not having noticed she’d been falling in love. All this time, I thought she’d just been hanging out with the guy, having a little fun, and based on our conversations, that he was the one in deeper.

“I got to go. I need to try and make this right.”

I stepped to the side, backing into David. “Go and do the right thing.”

Libby started running.

Cupping my hands around my mouth, I yelled, “Tell him the truth. It always helps.”

David wrapped his arms around me, whispering in my ear. “Yes, it does.”

I melted into him; at the same time I twisted my head to gaze into his eyes. “For the rest of my life, I will never forgive myself for that.”

“You should, I have. It’s over and done with. You’ve made amends. It’s time to let it go. There are other more important things to worry about.” Tenderly, he tipped up my chin and planted a sweet kiss on my lips. “But I promise, all is good with me.” He cocked his head as a shiver rippled through his body; his perfect, make me come hither body. “Come on, we’re going to be late.”

We walked into the heavily cinnamon-scented bakery and over to the table where my sister Mia sat with the love of her life, Zachary.
