"I'm his girlfriend." Cinnamon's chin quivered. She kept the tears threatening to spill down her face at bay.

"The paramedics are with him and will transfer him to Mountainside Hospital." Pity filled his features.

"Is it life threatening?" A wayward tear fell from the corner of her eye.

"I don't know, ma'am. If you'll excuse me." The policeman hurried away.

Cinnamon bit her lip to keep from crying and waited for Mayson to finish his statement. She kept her gaze focused on the door to the coffee shop, forcing herself to breathe in and out as she waited for the paramedics to wheel out the man she loved.

When it seemed like hours passed, a man wheeled a gurney out of A Whole Latte of Love. Kaleb lay outstretched, covered by a blanket. His eyes looked all over until they found hers.

Cinnamon ran to the ambulance. "Kaleb!"

He reached out his hand. "I'm okay," he croaked, then Kaleb cleared his throat. "Merely a flesh wound."

Cinnamon shook her head, the tears no longer held at bay. "Please don't joke at a time like this."

"I'm sorry." Kaleb shifted as they moved toward the ambulance, his pale face wincing in pain. "I'm fine. I promise. The bump on my head hurts worse than my shoulder."

"For now," the paramedic mumbled.

Kaleb glared at the man. "They're taking me to the hospital."

"I figured as much." Cinnamon wiped her tears on the back of her hand. "I called Grady. We're going to drive there together."

Kaleb's lips turned down. "You shouldn't have called them."

Cinnamon huffed. "I most certainly should have. We'll be there soon."

"You aren't going to ride with me?"

"Sorry, sir. No room today." The paramedic gave an apologetic look to Cinnamon.

"That's fine. He's going to be okay, though?" Cinnamon turned her attention to the young man.

"Should be." They hoisted Kaleb into the back of the ambulance.

"I love you," she called, wishing she could hold his hand all the way there.

"I love you, too."

They slammed the door before he could say anything more. Cinnamon turned away and quickened her steps to her house. She pulled out her phone and texted Mayson the details of what she knew. Knowing he needed to take care of his employees and business, she made sure he knew she understood if he didn't get to the hospital.

By the time she reached her house, Grady paced around his jeep, and Shane had his arms wrapped around Scarlet. "Sorry. I was able to speak with Kaleb."

"How is he?" Grady reached her in two long strides.

"He said it's merely a flesh wound." Cinnamon offered them a small smile, though tears still fell from her eyes.

Scarlet chuckled through her own tears. "He can't be that bad if he's cracking jokes."

"Let's go." Grady motioned for them to get in the jeep.

When they were all settled, Cinnamon answered as many questions as she could. By the time they reached the hospital, she was emotionally spent but strung up tighter than ahigh-wire.

Cinnamon followed the siblings and Shane into the hospital. Not really a member of the family, she had to have special access to get information regarding Kaleb's condition.

"How long will the surgery take?" Grady asked the nurse at the desk.
