“Fuck, I love you,” he murmured when we paused for breath. “It’s fucking insane that of all the people in the world, it’s you, but you’re…” Stroking his thumb over my jaw, he shook his head. “You’re everything that I never knew I wanted.”

I wasn’t used to big declarations, or any declarations, for that matter, and I thought I’d used my lifetime’s quota during the gig earlier. But here in the dark, with Cole’s body a warm, solid weight against mine, it was easy. Fixing my gaze on his, I spoke the words aloud for the first time.

“I love you, Cole.”

He melted against me, his head coming down to rest in the crook of my neck as he held me even tighter. “We did everything the wrong way, didn’t we? We fucked before we’d even done anything else. We split up, even when we weren’t properly together. But we can do it properly now, can’t we?”

“Yeah.” I felt him place a soft kiss to my throat, and I returned it with a press of my lips to his head. “We’ll have to work out what to say to our parents, but I don’t want to be without you anymore.”

His head shot up, his eyes meeting mine. “Boyfriends?”

I nodded, and he smiled, so wide and happy. “We’ll face them together. We’ll make them see that this is important to us.”

“I’m not looking forward to that conversation.”

“Me neither. Fucking hell, can you imagine how they’ll react? It’ll be worth it, though. You’re mine, Huxley, and now I have you, I’m not letting you go again.”

He was right. It would be worth it, and there was no way I was letting him go again. As much as I was his, he was mine.

Headlights cut through the darkness, slashing straight through our moment.Fuck. We instantly sprang apart. Another set of lights followed the first, blinding us both, before they started flashing. Covering his eyes with his arm, Cole scrambled off the car and dived for the passenger door.

“I’m not being caught in a dogging spot, Hux!” he shouted. “Get us out of here, now!”

My heart was pounding as I slid behind the wheel, starting the engine and spinning the wheels like we were in a car chase. “I didn’t know! Maybe they’re just people who wanted to see the view like we did.”

Cole glanced back through the rear windscreen, the cars disappearing from sight as I got us out of there. “They were flashing their headlights. That means they wanted to know if we were doggers.”

“You seem to know a lot about it for someone who’s so adamant that they don’t want to have public sex.” I couldn’t help grinning at him, and he finally laughed, shaking his head.

“Fucking hell. No. No shame to anyone who wants to, if you’re into all that. It could be hot, I guess. But I think we have enough to worry about with telling our parents we’re together. Getting caught at a local dogging spot isn’t on my to-do list.”

“Nor mine.” I reached over and squeezed his thigh. “Want to pick some music?”

He smiled to himself as he began fiddling with my stereo. Predictably, terrible pop music filled the car, but I bit down on my lip and forced myself not to say anything. I’d let my ears bleed. For him. Only ever for him.

“Huh. You do love me.” Leaning over, he pressed a soft kiss to my cheek before settling back in his seat. “But this relationship is all about give and take. You and me are equal partners in this. I think you’ll like the next song.”

“Equal partners. You know I don’t have much experience with relationships. Or any. I might fuck up. It’s probably a given.”

“Me neither, and I know I’ll fuck up too. But we’re good together, aren’t we?”

The familiar opening notes of “Somewhere Only We Know” sounded through the car speakers as I nodded. “Yeah. We are.”

Next to me, Huxley swallowed hard, his thigh bouncing against mine as we sat in the lounge, our parents across from us and a coffee table with a Trivial Pursuit board separating the two sofas. Tonight was the night. We’d done a lot of talking, and we’d worked out what we wanted to say to them. Now we just had to hope they’d listen and understand just how much we wanted to be together.

Fuck, how should we even begin?

“Okay, who wants the purple wheel?” When no one replied, David glanced up from the board, his gaze going first to my mum, then to me, and finally to Huxley. A frown pulled his brows together. “We’re doing this now, are we?” he muttered under his breath, and Huxley and I exchanged panicked looks. What was happening?

Clearing his throat, he took my mum’s hand. “June? Do you want to take the lead?”

My mum nodded, straightening up in her seat. “We know about the two of you.”

“What?” My heart fucking stopped, my mouth dropping open. Next to me, Huxley’s entire body went rigid.

“Cole.” Her voice softened. “I could tell when I saw the way you looked at Huxley when he was singing that Oasis song. It was clear to me that you were in love with him.”
