“Let me go get my bag. I have some things that will clean this up, and you might need a couple of stitches, but it’s actually looking a lot better than what I had been afraid it would.”

The bullet hadn’t gone deep at all, and honestly, she didn’t even think it really needed stitches.

“The hardest thing with a foot is making sure it doesn’t get infected. So my recommendation would be to stay off of it for a while, especially if I put a few stitches in it.”

“All right. I wasn’t sure how long I was going to hang with Aunt Carol, but I’ll just rearrange my schedule in Chicago and make sure that it’s long enough to recover.”

She nodded. She was suddenly feeling a little shy, although she wasn’t sure whether it was because she shot him, or whether it was because of the way he was looking at her.

It seemed almost...personal. She could hardly explain, but it made her heart shiver and her backbone curl.

She stumbled a bit as she stood, grabbing the door and hurrying inside.

She thought she heard Carol chuckling behind her, but maybe that was just her imagination. Heading to the mudroom on the other end of the house, where she kept her spare medical supplies, she grabbed her extra bag, which contained everything she would need, and ran back through the house, trying to think of what else she should do. Normally, she wouldn’t work on a human. It was actually illegal, but considering that she shot him... She hadn’t even thought about it. He could press charges. He could have her jailed.

Her eyes got wide. Surely he wouldn’t do that.

Of course, it was an accident, and Carol would vouch for her. Although he was her nephew, and if Carol had to decide on who she was more loyal to, it would be her nephew and not the woman who had just moved into her house.

Taking a deep breath, she tried to calm herself as she opened the door and walked back out to the porch.

Whatever happened, she would have to face it.

Chapter 7

“So, Aunt Carol, I’mpretty sure that when a woman shoots a man, that’s a sure sign that she’s not interested in anything romantic.”

James couldn’t help but say that to his aunt as soon as he was sure Mabel was out of earshot.

Aunt Carol laughed. “It was an accident. I don’t think you can read anything into it other than the woman should not be within five feet of the gun and preferably more.” She shook her head and muttered, “And I had such high hopes for this.”

“High hopes for what?” James asked.

“Oh, it’s just that the pistol... I heard some things about it, and I knew how interested Mabel was in Annie Oakley, and I was hoping that it would help the two of you finally get together.”

“The pistol? Help us get together? What are you talking about?” This was the second time today that she had totally baffled and confused him.
