“I’d love to get in touch with them—a real Pink Pistol Sister who is still alive. Wouldn’t that be neat?” Mabel grinned at James.

“And we could talk to her aunt. The one who put all of this together. Maybe she’s uncovered more details. Or at least she might have ideas of what direction we could go to start digging.” Mabel ran a finger over the pink pistol. It had brought eleven couples together and changed those lives completely.

“What are you going to write about you and James?” Carol asked.

“Oh, goodness. I hadn’t even thought of that.”

“You should. Then you ought to figure out how to pass it on. I don’t want to take any chances on losing what we have.” James grinned at her, and she had no choice but to return his smile.

“Oh, look at the time!” Carol exclaimed. “I’d better get to bed if I’m going to get up and get breakfast going at a decent hour in the morning.”

She folded her paper, handing it to Mabel to tuck into the gun case, and excused herself for the night.

“I still need to feed Denise.” Mabel snapped the case closed and pushed back away from the table. James stood with her and carefully set the gun case on the high shelf beside the refrigerator.

He turned back slowly to face her, still not saying anything.

“James?”

“Hmm?”

“Are you okay?” She hoped all the information about the gun hadn’t scared him or anything. Although she couldn’t imagine why it would have.

“I’m fine.” He stepped closer. “But I did want to ask you something.”

“Okay?” she breathed, her lungs freezing up as he didn’t stop until he was directly in front of her, his arms sliding around her back and his head lowering until his lips were beside her ear.

“You said you loved me.”

“And you said you loved me,” she returned, sliding her arms around his waist and smiling. She loved it when he held her and spoke in her ear, sending shivers all the way from her head to her toes.

“You meant it?” he asked, like he truly didn’t know.

“I did.” She took a breath, her lungs still not wanting to work properly. “I... I was hoping...hoping maybe you might be interested in getting a roommate?”

His lips had been trailing down her temple, but they froze and his whole body went still. “I hope you’re not thinking of moving Denise into my room to make it easier to feed her at night.”

“No. I wasn’t thinking about Denise at all.”

“Hmm. Then, yeah, I might be interested. Who would my roommate be?”

Like he didn’t know.

“Me?”

“Ah, Mabel. You don’t know how long I’ve waited to hear you say that. Are you sure? Because I can’t be noble about it.”

“I’m sure. I’ve been sure for a while, I just didn’t know how to say it to you.”

“Say, James, you can finally have what you’ve wanted for years.”

“Really?”

“To kiss you like I want to? To hold you all night long? To have you want me? Yeah. Really.” His lips trailed across her jaw and up to the corner of her mouth. “If we go out and take care of Denise, you’re not going to change your mind, are you?” he breathed.

“No. I told you, I’ve wanted this for a while but just didn’t...realize how much you wanted it too. We were both suffering, I guess.”

“Suffering. Now there’s a word that does not describe me—a man who has every single thing he’s ever wanted in life.”
