Serenity

My heart raced as I walked down the street. The feeling of eyes on me hit me for the second time today. As my hand hit the handle of the Raven’s Nest door, I finally risked a look around.

A strange car was parked down the street. The car wasn’t all that suspicious, but the camera facing my way was.

What the actual hell?

I rushed inside and ignored the greeting from Katya and Ellie. My friends could wait, I needed to talk to Walter.

The grumpy alpha was waiting in his office but the moment he saw my face he was on his feet.

“What’s wrong?” he demanded, his hands clasping on my biceps as he studied me, trying to drag an answer out of me when all I could do was sputter.

“Someone’s following me and taking pictures. This morning when I went to my parents’ house, I felt someone watching me. I couldn’t find anything. But just now there was a car out front and they had a camera on me. I don’t know who they are but they’re following me.”

He didn’t say a word as he grabbed my arm and dragged me through the back hallway and outside. The afternoon sun blinded me for a moment but he gave me no time to recover before we were rounding the building.

“Do you see them still?”

Goosebumps lined my arms as I glanced around. At this point, I was paranoid and terrified.

“There,” I said quickly. The car was still there and there was a man standing outside of it. His camera was dangling in his hand as he studied the building.

“Stay,” Walter ordered before storming off. The man saw Walter, eyes locked on him, and practically dove in his car. Within mere seconds he was flying off. He barely missed the old alpha by an inch before he was flying down Main Street.

“Shit,” I growled, hurrying out to make sure Walter was alright.

“I think you’re safe,” Walter said. “For now. No going anywhere alone.”

“Agreed,” I said. He almost seemed surprised by my quick agreement. That alone made him uneasy but he nodded once and led me back to the coffee shop. I had a shift to complete and Walter wasn’t one for long, heartfelt talks.

When I managed to get behind the counter, apron on, and ready to work, my best friends were breathing down my neck.

“What the hell?” was all Kat offered, throwing up her hands and nearly spilling the coffee she was making. She hastily put a lid on it and slid it over to the waiting customer, ignoring the line forming.

Ellie rolled her eyes and took the next order. It was busy enough that I was able to avoid this particular conversation for several more minutes before the coffee shop cleared.

“Okay, now spill,” Ellie demanded. “I’ve got a baby at home and a pack that’s in my business. Give me the gossip, I thrive on it these days.” Her emerald eyes sparkled as she laughed. I loved that she smiled so much lately. Anyone else who dealt with rejection, stalking, too much exposure to the media, and a pack that nearly tore yours apart, would have lost their ability to joke around.

Ellie was stronger than most, though.

“I think I have a stalker.” They both gasped in unison and glanced around like he was standing right in this room with us. I swallowed hard, that alone bringing back the heart-racing feeling from before. I’d been through enough shit in my life to not cower in fear easily. But this had truly left me shaken.

“What, how?” Kat demanded. I recounted the same story I’d told Walter quickly before another wave of coffee orders rolled in.

“He had a camera?” Ellie asked. “I wonder if it was paparazzi coming back to torture me. They might know that we’re friends now and want more insider knowledge.”

“Could be,” I said but something in my gut was telling me that wasn’t it. He was too focused on me and if that was all he wanted, he’d have just approached, right?

No, he was tracking me for some reason.

“It sounds like one of those private eyes from crappy TV shows,” Kat snorted. “Camera, ordinary car, running before confrontation.”

“Honestly, it fits,” I admitted. “But who would want to find me?”

There was only one person in my life that I’d cut out completely. Evrin was in the past and he wouldn’t be coming back in my life. Even after all these years the mere mention of his name had my chest tightening.

Being rejected by a mate would break anyone.
