Lockwood.

It had looked like such a cute, little town from the pictures Silas sent. Quaint, even.

Maybe it would be a nice refresher before we finally tracked down my brother and knocked some sense into him. He had been stumbling downhill for years, but I feared he was nearing the end of his rope. If we didn't intervene, there would be nothing left to save.

And I truly believed that his former mate, the one who sent him down this path, was the one person who might get through to him. Though apparently, she had no interest in that.

Could Evrin have been wrong about what he found out? He'd always been cagey with details and ignored our questions. Now Silas had planted the seed of doubt and I couldn't just ignore it.

I guess in a few hours we would find out. Silas was right about one thing. We needed answers, and we needed her.

There was no other choice.

I couldn't lose my brother.

“You’re a bit more…” the man trailed off as his gaze raked over me. “Curvier than I expected. And the tattoos.” His nose wrinkled as if he’d eaten something disgusting.

Clearly, my date tonight was a dick. Great, I should have known to steer clear of anyone named Charles Remington. I'd even dealt with some guilt over ignoring the mate I'd met yesterday and still keeping this date. Only for it to start like this.

“My tattoos and body are on full display in my profile picture,” I said, rolling my eyes. The fact he was intimidated by my omega softness despite working out regularly, was telling of his dating history. “Feel free to leave.”

“No, it’s fine,” he sighed as he took his seat, barely looking at me. If this guy thought I was going to give him the time of day after this, he was dead wrong.

If I wasn’t already starving then I’d have just walked out already. That and I was ready to see just how much audacity one pampered alpha could have.

I’d seen his type way too often. Pompous, thought his alpha designation made him special, and looked at omegas and women in general like possessions.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not opposed to being possessed by a strong, sexy alpha every chance I got, but that was a different type of possession, one that ended in many, many orgasms.

I had a feeling the alpha before me didn’t care if his partner got off.

“Welcome to Castelli’s, could I offer you a wine off of our list?” The waitress smiled at me then the alpha, waiting for a response.

“No, we’re fine,” he answered, waving her off without even sparing her a glance.

“He doesn’t speak for me,” I said before she could walk away. “Sorry about his rudeness. Could I have a glass of white wine, please. House special, it’s my favorite.”

“You got it,” she said, giving me a wink.

“Wine for dinner?” he asked, raising an eyebrow as if I broke some unspoken rule he had for me.

This man and I were getting on like oil and water.

“Of course. That’s literally why they have a pairing menu,” I pointed out. “If you haven’t been here before, I suggest you have the special, no matter what it is. The chef is a genius.”

“Cook,” he corrected as his eyes scanned the quaint restaurant like it was a hole in the wall. Everything here was nice from the fresh flowers to the decorations to the crystal wine glasses.

“Chef,” I said in a sickly sweet voice. “He trained in Italy, in fact. He calls it ‘reclaiming the heritage he was born into.’”

Charles narrowed his eyes.

“Do you often correct alphas?” he demanded.

I leaned in and leveled him with an amused look.

“Only when they’re wrong. Do you try hard to be this terrible of a date, or is this just your first?” I demanded. His jaw dropped and his cheeks tinted pink. “Life hack, if you want to actually land a girl, don’t comment on her appearance or speak down to her. It’s not sexy, it’s obnoxious.”
