Brit nods. “I have a small notebook I keep in my purse.”

Trigger throws her phone on the floor and smashes the device under the heel of his boot. At Brit’s gasp, he turns to her with a thoughtful expression.

“The sick fuck probably tracks you through your phone. We’ll get you a new one.”

Brit shakes her head again, fresh tears tumbling down her cheeks. “That doesn't change anything. We live with him! I don’t have anywhere to go.”

“You’re staying in my old apartment. It’s only one room, but since I moved in with Pebbles, it’s been empty. All my furniture is still there.”

“It’s okay, Brit. The club will help you,” I add for support.

“I have no money. I don’t even have a job.”

“What’d you do before? You said you moved here with Devin? When was that?” I ask.

Brit takes a deep breath. “We’re from Phoenix. We moved here eight months ago when Devin lost his job. His cousin lives here and gave him a job at the garage. I was a cosmetologist, and I mainly did hair.”

“Did you like it?” Trigger asks, genuinely curious.

“Ilovedit. I miss it so much.”

Trigger leans to the side and pulls his phone out of his back pocket. Brit watches him curiously. I have an idea of what he’s doing. I’m proven right when I hear the voice on the other end of the line.

“Maria! I have a question for ya. Pebbles and I have a friend. She’s in a bit of a bind and needs a job.Pause.Yeah, in Phoenix.Pause,Whenever you want.”

I hate only being able to hear his side of the conversation, but I’m almost positive I know what she’s going to say before Trigger smiles.

“Perfect! I will bring her by tomorrow.”

Trigger hangs up the phone, turning to Brit. “We’ll take you to the apartment tonight. I own the pawn shop right beneath it. Whenever you’re up and moving tomorrow morning, I’ll walk you down to the salon.”

I can tell Brit is overwhelmed as she shakes her head, trying to form words.

“The salon is two doors down from the pawn shop, so you don’t have to wake up too early. If I were you, I would contact Emery’s school and see if she can take a leave of absence until we get him dealt with. I don’t want him to try to get to her at the school.” As Trigger keeps talking, my head is spinning at how easily he’s coming up with a plan and how nonchalant he’s being about uprooting their entire lives.

“Okay,” Brit nods slowly, turning to look at me. I smile at her in assurance.

“Babe, what time can you be out of here?” Trigger spins his chair to face me.

I look down at my watch. “An hour and fifteen minutes.”

“Where is Devin now?” he asks Brit.

“He plays pool on Thursdays at some dive in the city.”

“Perfect. We don’t have to worry about him until tomorrow,” Trigger says, pulling his phone out again. He stands up, making his way out of my office.

“What the hell just happened?” Brit mumbles under her breath.

“You’re family now,” I say, shrugging.

“What does that even mean?”

“It means that you have an entire club of men behind you willing to protect you,” I inform her. “With that being said, I was drawn to you when we first met. I’m usually a pretty good judge of character, but this is my family. Do not make me regret allowing my family to protect you.”

Brit’s eyes widen and she nods at me. “I swear I will do anything to keep Emery safe.”

I smile. “Good. That’s all I need to hear.”
