She nods her head. “I would love to. I haven’t been back since I moved all my stuff out after my dad passed. I haven’t even driven down the street,” she whispers.

“Why don’t I pick up lunch and we can meet there? Have our lunch there.”

She looks up at me excitedly, her eyes shining with elation. “Yes!”

I follow behind her as she walks out of her office. She does one final spin at the entrance and watches as I pull her keys out of my pocket to lock the front door.

She looks at the keys in question and I hold them up to her. “Did you ever wonder why there was extra keys on your car keys?”

She points to the set. “Those aren’t my keys, those are yours.”

“Babe, you really think I’d have purple keys?”

She shrugs with a small smile. “Didn’t really think about it. Those are the keys to your car.”

“You mean your car?”

“Uh, no. My car is an orange VW bug, not a Ford Explorer.”

“Then you apparently have two cars, because the Explorer is yours.”

She furrows her brow as we walk up to the Explorer in question.

“I bought the car for you, Red. Why the hell would I need an SUV?” I chuckle.

“For when the babies come.”

“I have a truck for then.”

“Oh?”

“I have an ‘07 dodge. I keep it parked in the back parking lot at the shop. I don’t drive it much, but it has a huge backseat.”

Once we’re locked in the car, she looks around the inside with new eyes, taking in all the features and girly shit I had added to it for her.

“The rhinestone start button makes a lot more sense now.”

“I know how much you love your bling,” I say with a wink, causing her to blush.

When we get back to Tank and Maria’s, I hand her the keys and show her which one will let us into her house tomorrow.

Instead of going inside, I leave her at the doorstep and give her the envelope containing all the information about her new ownerships.

When I get home, I send her a text asking what she wants for lunch tomorrow. I fully expect her not to respond, but a grin takes over my face when I see her detailed response.

I go to bed with a big ass goofy smile on my face, dreaming of a red-haired little girl and a blonde-haired little boy swinging on a swing set behind a big ass white house.

Pebbles

I couldn’t sleep a wink last night and stayed up studying every single page of information that was in the envelope. I also snuck outside to search the glove box and found the car registration in my name.

I spent this morning washing and doing my hair, and for the first time in two months, I did my full skin care routine, minus the retinoids that are dangerous for pregnancy.

With my face feeling like a rainy day in the sahara, I get dressed and work up the courage to go outside, get in my new car, and to head to my new house.

It turns out that I was not prepared for the level of courage actually needed, and I’m frozen in place at the front door for no less than fifteen fucking minutes when I’m startled by my phone pinging with a text.
