Page 92 of Trigger's Forever

I raise an eyebrow his way as I continue to pet the dog's soft fur. The dog paws at my arm, seeming to not like that I took my attention away from him. I scratch behind his ears and his floppy tongue drops out of his mouth.

“Who is this, Jamie?” I ask, not taking my eyes off the big fluff ball.

“Well,” Trigger clears his throat. “That is Henry.”

“Henry?” The dog's ears perk up, no doubt recognizing his name.

“Yes. Henry.”

“Where’d Henry come from, Jamie?”

“Well, you see…” Trigger’s voice wanes.

“Jamie Hart.” I turn, giving him the side eye.

“I couldn’t leave him,” he says, gesturing to the sweet dog laying on the floor, wagging his bushy tail.

“Are we babysitting?”

“No,” Trigger says soberly.

“Okay…” I stand back up and turn to him. Henry follows my movement, coming over to sit on his hindlegs, right at my feet.

Trigger takes a deep breath and his shoulders drop in defeat. “I was going to look at a Camaro some lady was selling. Her grandpa just passed away and it was his. Henry was his dog. He’s only two. She was telling me how she had to take him to the pound because her dog doesn’t get along with any other dogs, and I couldn’t not take him. As soon as I sat down in the driver’s seat, he jumped in and wouldn’t get out. I had to take him.”

“Jamie, we’re going to be bringing two newborn babies home very soon, as in about a month. Is getting a dog really the best idea?” As soon as I look down at Henry, it’s like he knows we're talking about keeping him. I swear his eyebrows rise in a pout.

“Just look at him, Red,” Trigger begs.

“Ugh,” I groan, looking up towards the ceiling. “Fine, but we’re going to have to take him somewhere to see if he’s good with kids.”

Trigger leaps forward, lifting me in his arms and kissing my cheek over and over. “Thank you, baby.”

“Yeah, yeah.”

“No seriously,” he says somberly, dropping me back down to my feet. He holds me loosely in his arms and smiles. “I’ve always wanted a dog, I’ve never had the room for one. You’re making all of my dreams of a family come true.”

Henry makes his presence known by rubbing his cold nose against my leg.

“I hope it always stays that way,” I reply.

“It will.” Trigger moves over to the kitchen where he grabs a dog leash from the counter. “Now, I hope you didn’t have plans because I promised the big guy we would go to the pet store to buy him stuff.”

“Damn, I was really hoping for another dinner in the bath,” I whine.

“As soon as we get home, I’ll order you whatever you want.”

“We should probably start cooking more before we’re going to need to start feeding these little humans. It's probably frowned upon to feed your kids takeout three times a day.”

“Eh. We have a few years for that.”

“Try months, not years.” I laugh at his worried expression.

“You cook some things.”

“We can only eat so much pasta,” I laugh as he locks the door behind us.

Trigger opens the back door of my SUV and Henry jumps right in. I thank him as he then opens my door for me, securing me inside.
