“Then, a day after she gives birth, she’ll be trotted out to do that god-awful stand on the steps of the hospital, looking like someone who just pushed something the size of a watermelon out of something the size of a stretchy turtleneck, while he stands there slim, rested, and fashionably put together. Those pictures will be transmitted around the world and referenced for the rest of her life. And then, just when that indignity isn’t enough, they’ll start harping on when she’s going to lose the baby weight!”

He stared at her, wide-eyed. “Had some feelings about that, didn’t you?”

Her brows lifted and she nodded. “I didn’t realize how much, but yeah. It’s hella unfair.”

“Well, when you’re pregnant, you’re going to be gorgeous,” he said, pressing a kiss to her curls.

She stiffened, then said, “Funny you should mention that...”

His breath caught in his throat. Was she saying what hethoughtshe was saying?

“Is there something you want to tell me?”

She picked at the button on his shirt, denying him eye contact.

Were they ready for this when their situation wasn’t settled? The media interest in their lives was already at an astronomical level. Add in a pregnancy and a baby? His chest tightened. How would he protect them?

“Dani, areyoupregnant?”

She finally met his gaze, and her eyes searched his for... something.

He waited, tense.

“No.”

He exhaled and closed his eyes. Relief?

Almost certainly.

But what was that other feeling?

Was it disappointment?

“But for a second, I thought I might be. I was trying to think back to when it could’ve happened. We’ve been very careful.”

They had been. He’d stopped that night he’d come home to Primrose Park and found her watchingFour Weddings and a Funeral, because he hadn’t had a condom. And since then, they’d made sure to always have one. Except...

“It was that time during the opening reception,” she concluded. “When I’d left to go to the bathroom.”

And he’d gone after her. They’d been pushed outside the bubble they’d created for themselves at Primrose Park, and he hadn’t likedit. He’d needed to be close to her, to remind them both of what they’d been feeling, and he hadn’t considered the consequences of surrendering to his impulses.

Neither had she.

They could’ve been facing a big-ass consequence now.

“I still can’t believe we got carried away like that.”

“Did you take a pregnancy test?”

“I did. Do you want to see it?”

“That’s not necessary. But it was negative?”

She nodded.

“Did you throw it away?”

She pushed away from him. “Are you crazy? I can’t throw it away!”
