“Is this okay? Can we trust him?”

“Do you know how many celebrities shop here? Corey would lose that clientele if he was selling everyone out. Besides, he prides himself on restricting the spectacle to Backtrack.”

With a start, Jameson realized he could no longer hear the music that had been so audible when they’d been outside.

“Only a select few are provided access tothisexperience,” Dani continued. “And we go way back. Now, stop stalling. Time to shop. Do you trust me?”

His response was instantaneous. “With all that I am.”

“Right answer, Your Royal Highness.”

Corey’s assistant led them through white barn doors into a large room that continued the urban sophisticated decor from the previous one. Industrial styled track and pendant lighting illuminated the space that featured white throw rugs, metal accent tables, and a dark grey low profile sofa situated across from black drapes opened to reveal several racks of clothes.

Dani headed for the garments and began flipping through them.

“Nice. Nice. I like that,” she muttered to herself.

In addition to the clothes, the space included a small half moon–shaped platform, surrounded by mirrors on three sides, and a rust-colored chair with matching ottoman.

“Come here. Okay, these are all different. Just as there are infinite numbers of BBC TV channels—”

“Hey!”

She grinned cheekily. “—there are many different styles of streetwear, from skatewear to Hypebeasts. You can’t be inauthentic, though. It’ll look the best when you feel it. That’s why we’re trying out lots of styles. To see which one rocks best with you. Each outfit is already grouped together, so you should put them on that way.”

“Yes ma’am,” he said.

She stuck her tongue out and retreated, sinking down on the sofa in the main seating area. When he started to draw the curtains closed, she complained, “What are you doing? It’s not like I haven’t seen it all before?”

“Consider it part of the experience,” he said, shutting the drapes on her astonished expression.

The first outfit was a pair of blue jeans—Good God, were both knees torn open? How impractical!—and a voluminous red jumper with blue flames drawn along the hem and sleeve. She wanted him to wear this? He checked the tag on the jeans.

“How did you get my size?” he called to Dani.

“Margery.”

Of course.

He needed to have a discussion with his chief housekeeper. Remind her who she actually worked for.

Quickly donning the clothes, he stared at his reflection in the mirror.

Would you step one foot out of your house dressed like this?

Absolutely not. He didn’t want to leave the privacy ofthisroom. But he promised Dani an “experience,” and he truly loved making her happy.

Taking a deep breath, he pushed the curtain aside.

“Wow!” Dani leaned back on the sofa and studied him. “You look different.”

“Not like a prince or professor?”

“Oh no,” she said, with a laugh.

He turned away. “So, I look as ridiculous as I thought.”

“No, no!” She rose, her palms facing outward. “You could never look bad. But this style may not be for you.”
