“Clearly a lapse in her judgement.”

Among others.

“You look beautiful, love.”

Dani’s shoulders were covered in a bright pink fabric that did marvelous things for her glorious skin. Her hair was pulled back from her face, the style emphasizing her high, sharp cheekbones and full, kissable lips.

“Thank you.” Her expression softened. “I miss you.”

“I miss you, too. I didn’t expect to talk to you today. I thought it’d be a few more days, at least.”

“I know, but when Tasha told me about Banks, I had to call and check on you. See if you’d heard.”

“I’d heard.” He shoveled a hand through his hair. “Is it gaining traction over there?”

“Like a car with no brakes going down a very steep hill.”

Fuck.He shifted on the large window seat, the floor-length curtains brushing his arm. “What are people saying?”

She tilted her head to the side and a large diamond stud caught the New York afternoon sunlight. “You care?”

“I have to care, whether I want to or not.”

“What does that mean?”

His gaze strayed out the window and the purplish hue of the dusky London sky caught his attention. His apartment at Kensington Palace boasted one of the more pastoral views, as it was bordered by a small garden, but it didn’t give him the same peace and serenity he felt looking over his land at Primrose Park.

But heading out to his estate hadn’t been an option. After his meeting with the queen, he’d contacted his household’s private secretary, who was charged with providing administrative support for his new duties, including organizing his diary of events and arranging the logistics of his travel, security, and meals. Essentially, each part of his life would now be accounted for and coordinated with the other working members of the royal family. It was just as stifling as he’d always imagined.

“I lost my job.”

“What?” Dani’s hand flew up to cover her mouth then moved to press against her chest. “At the university?”

He nodded.

“Wait, do you mean the queen pressured you to leave or—”

“No. They fired me. They said my presence, quote, impaired their ability to provide a safe and distraction-free place to educate young minds, end quote.”

“Those fuckers!”

Despite the sting he still felt over this dismissal, the corner of his mouth tilted upward. He was a lucky bastard to count himself as one of the few recipients of her fierce loyalty.

“That’s not all...”

She shook her head and muttered, “Damn. When it rains, it fucking monsoons.”

“Pardon?”

“Just something my Nana used to say.”

“Did your Nana have a saying foreveryoccasion?”

“Pretty much. Go ahead, lay it on me. What else?”

He exhaled. “The queen is drafting me into service. Again.”

“Oh no! Baby...”
