“Thank you, Sandra. We’re happy to be here,” Dani said, actually meaning it.

People watching the show’s feed would just see Sandra, Dani, and Jameson. They’d hear the background noise and get a sense of the commotion surrounding the event, but they’d never see the teams of assistants, bodyguards, crew, cameramen, and even the guests who didn’t make for exciting television but were essential to the running of events like these. It was an entire production.

Sandra’s toothy grin rivaled the brilliance of Times Square on New Year’s Eve. “You look stunning. Who are you wearing?”

Dani shook her head, letting her bone-straight, waist-length hair cascade over one shoulder. She slid a hand to her hip and thrust a bare leg through the slit in the skirt, shifting into the killer pose she’d practiced for this precise moment. The clicks and flashes rewarded her effort. “Aurora Kerby.”

“That’s who designed the gown you wore to the tribute ball, right? The one the entire world saw when you and the prince announced your relationship?”

Dani arched a look up at Jay and winked. “That’s right.”

The host turned to Jameson and Dani watched the transformation from entertainment reporter to royal fawner. “Prince Jameson, how are you enjoying your stay in America?”

“I enjoy being anywhere Duchess is,” Jameson said in his deep, cultured voice.

Dani had found his British accent potent when they’d first met, but here in America, where no one in the vicinity sounded like him?

It was lethal. A panty soaking, pussy clenching instrument of devastation.

He would never be called outgoing, but he had a charm and charisma that could put most people under his spell, when he chose to use it. As he was doing now.

And Sandra was falling hard.

Damn, girl. Don’t hit your head.

“You two have made headlines around the world and people are obsessed with your love story,” Sandra gushed. “Does that include your grandmother, the queen?”

Jameson’s grip tightened on Dani, but he continued smiling, speaking calmly and clearly into the microphone the host was holding in his direction. “The queen knows how much Duchess means to me. How important she is in my life.”

Truer words.

Especially since being here with Dani went against the queen’s wishes. But no one outside of the family and a few members of the royal staff knew that.

“A prince and he’s romantic, too?” Sandra’s tongue darted out to touch her lip and she drew her fingers through her hair. “He’s a catch. You better hold on to him.”

Dani met the woman’s eye. “I plan to.”

“Yes, well...” Sandra cleared her throat. “I guess there’s no surprise why you’re here today.”

Assured that her message had been delivered, Dani let loose a lighthearted laugh. “None at all. Nyla Patterson is a great friend of mine. I’m so excited for her. And for all of you,” she said, playing to the crowd. “You’ll get the chance to see how extremely talented she is.”

Someone screamed, “We love you, Duchess!”

Dani smiled and waved in the general direction of the proclamation. Then she nodded to Vicky, who gave the signal to wrap everything up.

Sandra’s expression tightened but she carried on. “I’m sure she appreciates you being here. It was a pleasure talking to the two of you. Enjoy the movie.”

“Thank you.”

They walked the last few yards, but when they failed to stop and talk to anyone else, the questions grew more outrageous.

“Prince Jameson! Prince! Have you dated a Black woman before?”

“Does your mother like Duchess?”

“Did you teach the queen how to twerk?”

“Duchess! They’re getting ready to announce the presenters forthe 2023 Hip-Hop Awards. Any response to the rumor that you’re being disinvited?”
