Being with Dani was intoxicating. He looked forward to even the most mundane things when he knew he’d be with her. He’d never thought he’d find someone who stimulated him mentally and physically, and who, more importantly, was as unimpressed with his royal status as he was.

The server plated two slices with accompanying sauce.

Dani inhaled a huge breath. “I’m not eager to put my mouth on any dick that’s spotted, but if you love it, I’m willing to give it a try.”

She dipped her spoon into the wedge of pudding drizzled with sauce, then took a tentative bite. She perked up immediately.

“This is good! It’s not what I was expecting. At all. It reminds me of bread pudding.”

Tingles of happiness lightened his limbs. He didn’t question the pleasure he derived from her enjoying something that had been apart of his life since he was a kid. He just dug into his own serving and reveled in the air of quiet contentment as they enjoyed the delicious dessert.

When he’d taken his last bite, he put his spoon down and sighed.

“I can’t express enough how much I’ve enjoyed this. A night out in London with you and we weren’t mobbed by press? Thank you.” He lifted her hand and brushed his lips against her skin.

“You’re welcome. And while I totally did this for you, I also had an ulterior motive. I wanted to see if we could get away with it and figure out how much our life would be impacted by the press. And I’m happy to report wecando it. It just takes a little planning and trustworthy people.”

She was fearless. She really believed she could control everything in her orbit. He found her confidence incredibly attractive.

And her certainty made him want to believe she was right. That maybe he was overreacting to something that could be managed. Especially with Dani by his side.

He wiped his mouth with his napkin. “Are you ready to go?”

“We’re not done.”

She gestured and a server came over with another covered dish.

“Love, I’m stuffed. I don’t think I could eat—”

Dani lifted the cloche and he stared at the package wrapped in white tissue paper. He picked it up and looked at her inquisitively.

She rolled her eyes. “I wouldn’t have taken the time to wrap the gift if I was just going to tell you what it is.”

“This is a first edition of Aristotle’s Discourses of Government!” Wonder softened his tone as he held the leather-bound folio in his hands.

“I know.”

“It’s considered the world’s most important and influential political text derived from philosophical truths.”

“That’s what they told me when I bought it.”

“But how? First editions are exceptionally rare. I’ve never been able to find one.”

“Can I tell you a secret?”

“Always,” he said, although he didn’t take his attention from the book.

“You and I are a pretty famous couple, and people tend to want to help us. I put some feelers out and here we are.”

Here we are...

She watched him, her expression unsure. “Do you like it? I checked and you don’t already own it.”

Without answering he carefully put it down and claimed her mouth in a kiss that he relished more than anything they’d sampled that evening.

“I love you.”

Her eyes were dark liquid pools. “I love you, too.”
