Dani stretched and softly kissed him. “Try not to worry about it. They didn’t ruin our night.”

“But if there’s a leak, I need to plug it. We didn’t attend a gala or take a stroll down the Mall in front of the palace. You tried to keep this moment for us only to have someone sell out our privacy.”

Dani’s chin dipped down and she averted her gaze.

He hated that they’d sullied her surprise for him, but the experience only strengthened his resolve to seek a life away from his family. Was it a crime to want to enjoy a simple meal out with the woman he loved without it turning into a fucking circus?

Dani crossed her legs, barely noticing her left foot, clad in nude Rebecca Allen heels, bouncing.

Wait, that’s not how they did it.

She shifted, bringing her foot down and pressing her knees together, sliding her legs to the side and then crossing her ankles.

Yes, that’s right.

Only—

Who could sit like this for any length of time? It was hella uncomfortable.

She bit her lip.

“Don’t be nervous,” Jameson said, stroking her thigh. The warmth of his touch singed her skin through the fabric of her yellow skirt.

“What? Nervous? Who? Me? No,” she said, waving off his statement.

The few times she’d visited Buckingham Palace previously hadbeen for large, ceremonial events. And the last time she was here, she’d experienced one of the worst moments of her life. What was she in for this time?

She glanced around the drawing room, decorated in shades of blue. Jameson assured her this was a private family room, but it didn’t look like any family room she’d ever been in.

“You said she could be calling us in because of what happened with the photographers outside the restaurant last night.”

“It’s possible.”

“Then how can you be so calm? What if she’s angry and she takes it out on your mother? And it’s all my fault because being there was on me?”

“It’ll be fine,” he said, his hand rubbing comforting circles on her back.

She leaned into his touch, unable to resist. “Says you. The last time I saw the queen, she wasn’t exactly warm.”

Warm? Really? You should’ve just called it out: she was a real bitch!

“I’m not saying she’s going to be warmthistime,” he said. “But she did request your presence.”

Dani narrowed her eyes at him. “I was here by her invitation last time.”

“I promise, if she starts insulting you, we’ll leave.”

He would. Of that Dani had no doubt.

“You can have your choice of anyone or anything in the world... But not Jameson. Not this family. I won’t allow it.”
