“Don’t do that, Catherine. Those children were hurt because of a hate crime but no one wants to call it that. What are you going to do about it?”

The family was all about events and using the media. Why couldn’t they shine some light on what happened and who’d done it? Were they on the trail of the perpetrators?

“It’s not our job to do anything.”

“Bullshit!”

“Your language!” Catherine exhaled. “Do you use any other words?”

“Forgive me for being outraged. Aren’t you?”

“Of course!”

“Then fucking say something about it!”

“I did! That’s why you were here!” Catherine asserted, spots of color dotting her pale cheeks.

Dani frowned. “What?”

“We’re allowed in because we stay out,” Catherine said, as if it were a nursery rhyme or personal mantra.

Dani wasn’t in the mood to banter with the fucking Riddler.

“What does that mean?”

“Quite simply, we’re allowed to remain a monarch and live the lives we do by keeping our noses and opinions out of politics. It’s the only reason we’ve survived the changes in legislative power. If we start ‘speaking out,’ the people can decide to get rid of us just like any other bureaucrat.”

“That’s ridiculous! In fact, it’s all a joke. No wonder Jameson wants as little to do with the Company as possible.”

Catherine exhaled impatiently. “As you’ve seen from the official engagements you’ve done with Jameson, we get a lot of coverage. Depending on the event, that coverage can be local or international. Over in America, would this event have gotten any press?”

The conversational whiplash with this woman!

Dani shook her head. “No, I don’t believe we would’ve broken into a sports event or the latestHousewivesepisode to watch a member of the royal family going to visit people in a hospital.”

“That’s what I thought. But everything you’ve done while you’ve been here? Covered not only in the States but across the world.Thatis why you are important.”

It was like Dani was finally being let in on a secret. Her being there meant there would be press attention and the reason the children were in the hospital would get coverage as well. And maybe some pressure would be put on those in power to do the right thing.

Game recognized game.

This woman wasn’t to be underestimated.

Dani sat back. “So, you knew the bombing of that after-school center was a hate crime?”

“Of course. The anti-immigrant sentiment has been growing out of control. But if the government and media refuse to label it as a hate crime—”

“You can’t call it that,” Dani finished for her. And took it a step further. “But I can.”

“Exactly.”

“But I didn’t. I didn’t say anything.” She reached into her purse for her phone. “But I can fix that.”

“No.” Catherine put her hand over Dani’s screen. “We definitely do not need a social media post.”

“Thenwhat?” she lashed out, brimming with frustration.

“I wanted your presence. That’s it. That would’ve been enough. Now...” Catherine shook her head.
