Instantly, a rush of relief surged through my body and that was how I knew, taking a job at Beckford, despite it being Kyle’s company, was the right thing to do.

“Really?” I asked, unable to hide my enthusiasm. “I’m happy to accept.”

We shook hands and I couldn’t tell if it was my excitement or something else that felt like a spark between us.

“Wait,” I said, suddenly realizing something. “I don’t even know what the job is for.”

“Oof,” Jerry said. “I really dropped the ball with this one, but then again, you didn’t ask.” We both laughed. “The position is administrative but there is a lot of room to grow.”

He then told me the salary and I would’ve accepted the job even if it meant washing ever executive’s car with a toothbrush every day. The money was too good to pass up. Not only would I be able to get Lily and I a house with a yard, I’d be able to save for her future.

“I definitely accept,” I told him. “I’m kind of a nerd for filing systems and spreadsheets. If you didn’t guess that already.”

“I think I have your number, Emma,” Jerry teased. “Let me show you to your workspace.”

Okay, it might have been foolish to accept a job without knowing what it was, but taking the job meant no more stressing about money. As Jerry led me to a bank of elevators, he hit the up arrow, and we were already on the tenth floor, leaving only two floors above us.

I knew I’d be okay as long as I didn’t have to see Kyle every day, but there was a sinking pit in my stomach. Jerry tapped the button for the top floor and I knew Kyle most likely had an office on the top, I was sure the whole C-Suite did. But, I also knew Kyle used to almost exclusively work out of NYC. There was a chance I would be tucked in some office somewhere and not have to see him, and there was an even bigger chance that he would still spend most of his time not only out of the office, but out of the state.

But still, I couldn’t help but smooth the sides of my blond hair, that I’d styled into a bun, and adjust the buttons on my blouse.

When the elevator dinged, we stepped off and an expansive view of the city opened before us. The whole wall on the vestibule was windows and it was a killer sight.

I could get used to this.

Jerry talked about employee benefits and days off and all the things I should’ve been listening to, but I couldn’t focus on him at all. He was leading me down a long hall of offices and the name plates outside the door read things like “VP” and “CFO” and every time we walked past one door, I was more and more sure we were heading to the big office and the very end.

A modern desk with a rounded front and computer rested just outside a glass paneled office door. The desk was stocked with all kinds of office supplies—notepads, an iPad, stapler, tape, pens of all kinds—but nothing personal. It was clear no one was working there. It was also clear from the plaque reading, ‘Kyle Beckford CEO’ whose office was behind those doors.

“And this is your new home,” Jerry said warmly.

“I—uh—” I didn’t know what I was going to say. Maybe decline the job, but I didn’t have a chance to finish that thought.

The office door opened and Kyle stepped out wearing a gray suit and a smug smile. My breath caught. He looked so handsome and so pleased with himself I didn’t know if I wanted to kiss him or slap him.

“Congratulations on the new job, Emma,” Kyle said, holding out his hand.

Chapter 9

Kyle

SeeingEmmainmyoffice, wearing her professional suit, was sexy as hell. Something about the way she looked in those unassuming clothes, so intelligent, in her perfectly appropriate outfit, when I knew what she looked like while getting fucked, while orgasming, was almost too much for me too bear.

Or maybe it’d been too long since I’d had sex.

But then my gaze swept up to her face. Her pouty lips were downturned, and her blue eyes were wide. Emma’s arms were warped around herself like she was in distress, and I couldn’t have that. Yes, I sort of tricked her into taking the position, but I didn’t want her to react that way.

Emma took my hand that I was holding out to her and shook it.

“Th-thank you,” she said.

“Jerry, thanks for bringing Miss Milton up. I can take it from here.”

“Sure,” Jerry said. He then turned to Emma and looked at her a little too appreciatively. I didn’t like it. A man knows what another man is thinking, and recently divorced Jerry was thinking he’d like to date a younger woman. “Go Bulldogs,” Jerry said.

Emma visibly relaxed when she laughed. “Go Bulldogs,” she echoed back.

I gave Jerry a curt nod before he turned back down the hall.
