“Yeah, well, what’s best for me is knowing when my family is in danger.”

“I promise if anything like this ever happens again, I’ll make her tell you. Deal?”

Rock narrowed his eyes. “It better never happen again now that she’s under your protection.”

Kade nodded and took a step back into the apartment, motioning for Rock to come in. “It won’t. She’s sleeping, but if you’d like to sit with her for a bit, you can.”

They both made their way into the bedroom where Rock pulled up a chair next to the bed and sat. “You kick his ass for doing this to her?”

Kade chuckled. “Shekicked his ass. Literally, with her boot.”

Shaking his head, Rock smiled. “That’s my girl.”

“The sheriff stopped by the hospital this morning. Caspian is going to go to prison for a long time. He was already on parole and adding kidnapping, stalking, and assault to that, and they think he’ll be in for at least ten years or more because of his criminal history.”

Nodding, Rock looked at Kade. “You look like shit. Why don’t you go crash on the couch for a while. I’ll stay here with her.”

He patted the older man’s shoulder. “Wake me if she wakes up, please.”

“You got it.”

“I don’t wanna take the medicine.”

His Little patient was not a very well-behaved one. She didn’t want to take any more medication because she didn’t like that it made her so drowsy. She insisted she wasn’t hungry every time he tried to feed her and he’d caught her trying to climb out of bed twice.

“Little girl, I’m keeping track of all your naughtiness, and your bottom is going to be really sorry once you’re feeling better,” he told her with a raised brow.

Her mouth dropped open. “Nuh-uh, you’re not keeping track.”

Smirking at her, he pulled his phone from his pocket and opened the Notes app before turning the screen to her. He could swear her eyes got bigger and bigger as she read the list he’d already started.

“Now, I would suggest you take your medicine unless you’d like me to add that to the list. Oh, and if you don’t take it orally, I’ll have Doc come in and give you some medication rectally.”

She snatched the tablets out of his hand so fast, he couldn’t help but chuckle. Dropping them into her mouth, she grabbed the sippy cup he was holding out for her and drank them down.

“Good girl. I know you don’t like being drowsy. I’ll call the doctor and see if we can get something that won’t make you so sleepy, but you have to keep taking these for now.”

“You don’t play nice, Daddy.”

Grinning, he leaned down and kissed her forehead. “When it comes to my Little girl’s health and safety, you’re right, I don’t play nice, and I never will.”

Her glare softened, and her frown slowly turned up into a soft smile. “I love you, Daddy.”

“I love you, too, Princess.”

TWENTY-SIX

REMI

Remi: How are you doing? I haven’t heard from you. I miss you. I have so much to tell you.

Carlee: I miss you too! I can’t wait to hear it all. I’m good, I started a new job and I’ve been insanely busy. Let’s schedule something soon. Love you too.

Smiling down at her phone, Remi replied and sent a heart emoji. They’d been friends forever and no matter how much time they spent apart, they would always be close.

Sitting in bed for four days straight was getting on her very last nerve. Not only was she feeling antsy, but she was also tired of sleeping. At least the doctor had prescribed her some different medication that would help with her bruises and swelling but didn’t make her drowsy.
