I thought back to that time. “I have memories of playing football at recess.”

“That’s what you remember?” Delaney asked.

I smiled. “I think gym class was fun, as well.”

Delaney laughed at that. “It’s my favorite too.”

“I think it’s everyone’s favorite.” I wasn’t sure if we had anything in common, but she was more mature than Maggie. She had thoughts and opinions, and I wanted to get to know her better.

“What’s your favorite subject?Realsubject,” I added when I suspected she was going to run through classes like art and P.E.

“Math,” she said, then she used hersee in the futurecard to check the top three cards on the pile. Lifting them so I couldn’t see them, she grinned at me, then turned them back over.

“What do you like about it?” I asked, wondering if I should use askipcard. Was Delaney tricking me into thinking there was an exploding card at the top of the pile? Taking a chance, I took the top card and breathed a sigh of relief when it was ataco cat.

Delaney giggled at my reaction. “Math’s easy. I’m in GT.”

I raised a brow when she used a second skip card. “Wow. That’s impressive.”

“Mom says so.”

“Your mom is super smart.”

“I know,” Delaney said as she waited for me to make my move.

“Should I skip or take my chances?” I asked her, keeping a close eye on her expression.

She giggled, and I still wasn’t sure if she was tricking me or not. “Are you scared?”

Irritated by her very familiar taunt, I said, “No,” and grabbed the top card. It was an exploding kitten. “Good thing I have adefusecard.” It was the only card that saved a player from an exploding card.

“I bet that’s your only one though,” Delaney said as she set down another skip card.

My hand hovered over the deck. “Is this one an exploding kitten too?”

She just smiled.

I double-checked my cards, but I didn’t have any skip cards. I must have been mistaken. I turned over the card, and Delaney erupted into a fit of giggles. I threw the card in the air and fell over. “You got me.”

“You’re a much better sport about this when you’re not playing your brothers,” Mom said, coming into the room.

“Oh yeah, I would be wrestling them right now,” I said, sitting up.

Natalie smiled as she followed my mom and moved to sit on the couch, observing us.

“You wrestle your brothers when you lose?”

I shrugged. “Well, yeah. But in my defense, they cheat.”

Mom snorted. “That’s what the loser always says.”

“It’s true. Tyler hides cards under the couch, and Sam used to stack the deck.”

“Mmm,” Mom said, her lips twitching.

“I’d love to see you three interact. I bet it’s entertaining,” Natalie said.

“It’s something, all right,” Mom said.
