“They tried to tell me to wait for Carter to move back.”

“So, you’re supposed to put your life on hold and wait for him to come back to you?

“I have too much self-respect for that. Besides, I was just done with him and his family. Being there wasn’t good for Delaney or me.”

“I have to agree.”

I smiled at him. “You’re just happy I moved here.”

He nodded. “Over the moon.”

I laughed. “Who knew there was a sweet guy under all that grumpiness?”

“I’m not grumpy.”

“You were.” But maybe he hadn’t been in a long time.

We’d finished eating, leaving our trash scattered on the blanket. He pulled me to standing. “We have the house to ourselves.”

Feeling out of breath, I asked, “When is your mom bringing her back?”

“Not until four.”

“You’re kidding?” I felt giddy inside, like we had all the time in the world.

He raised a brow. “Want to take this inside?”

“Yes.” I didn’t think we’d get this time alone. When Delaney was at school, the crew was usually here. I hadn’t counted on his mom coming through for us the day after we decided to take a chance on something.

He lifted me bridal-style and carried me to my door and waited for me to turn the knob and push it open. “Home sweet home.”

“It is now,” I said as he carried me to my bedroom, closing the door and locking it behind us in case his mom returned earlier than we thought.

CHAPTER14

MAC

Ilowered Natalie to the bed, not quite believing we had a few hours to ourselves. I should have been working, but I wanted this time with her. It was all I could think about after I went home last night. I couldn’t believe I’d finally made a move, and it felt so good.

But the reality was, I was dating a single mother, and I needed to be careful. If something seemed like it was too good to be true, it probably was, so a part of me was still waiting for something bad to happen. For Natalie to tell me she wasn’t ready for a relationship. I told myself I was being cautious, not holding back. But I wasn’t so sure about that.

Instead, I poured my feelings into my kisses. Even though we had all afternoon, there was a sense of urgency. We tore at each other’s clothes, not pausing until we were both naked.

Natalie laughed as she looked up at me. The afternoon light poured through the windows, warming us and illuminating her face.

She was gorgeous.

My breath caught in my throat as she placed featherlight touches on my skin.

Then she lifted her head to kiss me. “We don’t have all day.”

“I wish we did.” My voice was guttural, my muscles tight with the effort to hold back and savor this moment. How often would we have the luxury of an afternoon in bed?

So, I kissed her mouth, then her jaw, her collarbone, and lower still, needing to taste her. I paused on her nipples before moving downward, placing light kisses on her soft stomach. Her legs spread for my shoulders, and I didn’t waste any time licking her core and sucking her clit. When I added my fingers, her body arched off the bed as I continued to drive her higher. I didn’t let up until she was writhing, her fingers twisted in the comforter.

When I increased the pressure of my tongue and added a second finger, she went off. I rode the waves of her orgasm, not moving up her body until she was resting flat on her back again.

“That was—”
