I hadn’t intended to move on this quickly after my divorce, but when the right person comes into your life, you take the leap. I just wasn’t sure where Mac’s head was at. Was he still cautious because of his history with women? Or was he finally putting it behind him?

After dinner, we cleaned up and headed into the family room because the night air was cool. Mac put on the TV to something Delaney would watch, and we sat on the couch while Mac set up the puppy’s bowls and crate. He filled a small basket with his toys.

Once the puppy ate dinner and Mac took him outside to pee, the puppy curled up with Delaney on the couch. Mac started a fire, and we sat on the couch, reminiscing about the day. When it was close to Delaney’s bedtime, I said, “We should get going.”

Mac smiled and pointed at Delaney, who was curled up on the couch, asleep. “Why don’t you stay the night? I can move her into the guest room.”

I hated to wake her. It would be hard to get her back to sleep if I moved her now. “If you’re sure?”

He grinned. “I’m positive. Let me make up the guest room, and then I’ll move her.”

He disappeared, and I wondered what I was getting myself into. We’d helped him buy a puppy, then supplies, and now we were staying the night at his house. It was wonderful and domestic, but was Mac someone we could count on?

When the B&B opened, I’d be tied to that place, forced to be on call twenty-four hours a day. The thought didn’t hold the same appeal it did when I was contemplating this new step in my life.

Mac returned and said, “All set.” Then he lifted Delaney’s sleeping form into his arms. The sight did some crazy pitter-patter thing to my heart. I followed him up the steps and down the hallway into a bedroom. There was a double bed, a nightstand, a bookshelf along one wall, and a dresser.

He’d already pulled back the covers, so he lowered her down and pulled the comforter over her.

I leaned over to kiss her forehead, wondering what she’d think when she woke in a strange bedroom. “Do you have a nightlight for the hallway so she can find the bathroom if she has to get up in the middle of the night?”

“I’m sure I have one somewhere.” He scrounged in the drawers of the bathroom, lifting the lights when he found them. He plugged one into the bathroom socket and one in the hallway. “How’s that?”

“Perfect,” I said as he pulled me into his side. We returned to the family room where the fire was still going strong.

“Are you sure it’s okay for us to stay?”

“I like having you here. You and Delaney fill all the empty spaces.”

My heart warmed at that. I liked being what Mac needed. We were probably moving too fast, but I couldn’t seem to put on the brakes because I liked him, and I wanted him to be happy. It was a different sort of relationship than what I’d had with Carter. We’d met in college at some party. We never intended for it to be long-term. We should have given each other space before settling down with each other.

Mac picked up the remote and flipped through channels as we snuggled together on the couch. I rested my cheek on his chest, listening to the steady beat of his heart. When it got late, he clicked off the TV, taking the puppy out to the yard and settling him in the crate for the night. Then he held out his hand. “Ready to go to bed?”

I placed my hand in his, more than ready to spend the night with him. Who knew how many opportunities we’d get for something like this? Or maybe we’d get lucky, and Delaney would be okay with overnights. At least until the B&B officially opened. Then everything would change.

A lamp cast a muted glow over the room. He handed me a T-shirt and shorts, and I cleaned up in the bathroom before joining him in the bed.

“Should we behave ourselves since Delaney is just down the hall?” Mac whispered in my ear.

I surprised myself by saying, “Can you be quiet?”

He took that as a challenge and rolled me onto my back, settling between my legs. He shifted his hips so that his cock ground into my center. “Can you?”

I gasped at the contact, not entirely sure I could make that promise. Not with him.

“Let’s see.” Then he was kissing me. The thought of needing to be quiet spurred our desire until we heard a whimper.

Mac lifted his head. “Is that—”

Then another.

“I think it’s the puppy.”

Mac dropped his head to my chest. “I’m being cock-blocked by a dog.”

I giggled, my fingers tangling in his hair.

He rolled to his back and threw his arm over his forehead. “Should we get him?”
